Swimwear photography is one of the most demanding categories we shoot. It combines technical fashion lighting with the energy of a lifestyle campaign and the discipline of e-commerce consistency. A single brand might need 60 styles photographed across 4 model sizes, both on-figure and flat-lay, all in two weeks. Here's how we structure a swimwear production at AIMI's Guangzhou studio.
Swimwear is unforgiving. Wrinkles show, straps twist, padding shifts, and any fit issue is amplified by tight tailoring. The day before shoot, our stylists steam every piece, check the fit on the booked model size, and pre-pin where needed. We also test every fastening — clasps, ties, zippers — to make sure nothing fails on camera.
Most of our swimwear work is shot in-studio, then composited or graded to feel beach-adjacent without requiring location travel. Our hero setup:
The half-CTO gel is the trick — it pushes the rim light warm and instantly reads as "outside in summer," even when we're shooting in a windowless studio in January.
The hardest part of swimwear isn't lighting — it's keeping the model's expression and energy consistent across 60 styles in a 10-hour day. Our approach:
For e-commerce we shoot 6 angles per style: front, 3/4 right, profile, 3/4 left, back, and a detail of any signature design element (a particular knot, hardware piece, or lining). For brand campaign work we additionally capture two editorial frames — wider, looser, with energy and movement.
Swimwear retouching has become a sensitive topic — and rightly so. Our policy is to remove temporary blemishes, stray hairs, fabric lint, and minor wrinkles, but to preserve body shape, skin texture, stretch marks, and natural features. Brands with a body-positive position appreciate that we don't have to be asked.
A standard 60-SKU swimwear collection produces about 360 e-commerce images and 30-40 campaign frames, delivered in 8-12 working days fully retouched. Brands typically use the e-com set on their site and marketplaces, and the campaign set across paid social, email, and PR.
