1. What a First Collection Actually Needs
New brands consistently overthink the first shoot and under-plan it. The launch image set for a clothing SKU needs four to six frames, not fifteen:
- Front view — the main listing image, clean and true to color.
- Back view — buyers check it more than brands expect.
- Detail close-up — fabric texture, stitching, hardware; this is your quality proof.
- Fit/context shot — ghost mannequin or on-model, showing how the garment sits.
- Optional styled scene — for ads and social, one per hero SKU is enough at launch.
A 12-SKU first collection at five images each is a 60-image shoot — a half-day to two-day studio job, not a month-long production. Scope it that way and the budget stays sane.
2. Shot Types and What They Cost
Apparel photography is priced by shot type because the labor genuinely differs:
- Flat-lay — from $12/image. Garments styled flat on a surface. Fast, consistent, ideal for variants and social grids.
- Styled flat-lay — from $25/image. With props and scene styling for a branded look.
- 3D ghost mannequin — from $35/image. The hollow-form effect that shows fit without a model. The workhorse of e-commerce apparel.
- On-model — from $800/day per photography team. Model and makeup fees are quoted separately. Worth it for hero pieces; overkill for every colorway.
All rates are starting prices — final quotes depend on garment count and shot list. The trap to avoid: booking on-model for the whole collection on day one. Launch with ghost mannequin coverage across all SKUs and on-model for two or three heroes, then reinvest in what sells.
3. How to Brief a Studio From Overseas
You do not need to fly to Guangzhou. A usable brief is four things:
- Reference images — listings or mood boards showing the style you want. Links work fine.
- Your SKU list — garment count, colorways, sizes to shoot.
- Shots per SKU — use the four-to-six frame rule above, or ask for our shot-list template.
- Brand guidelines — if you have them; if not, references do the job.
From there you get a quote and a schedule. Proofs arrive in an online gallery where you leave markup comments from any time zone; revisions follow the package. Standard delivery is 5-7 business days per project.
4. Getting Samples to the Studio
If your manufacturer is in China, the cheapest and fastest route is factory-to-studio: your supplier ships garments to us by domestic courier (SF Express or JD Logistics), no export paperwork, a few days in transit. We photograph every arrival against your packing list so nothing goes missing silently.
After the shoot, samples can be returned to the factory, stored at the studio for your next drop, or forwarded to another supplier. Multi-supplier production is normal — each factory ships separately and we consolidate. The full logistics picture is on our near-factory photography page; brands selling on Amazon should also read the Amazon FBA photography service page.
5. Real Work From Our Apparel Portfolio
Studio apparel work covers a wide range of garments and moods. Three examples from the portfolio:

- Pink Hoodie & Skinny Jeans — on-location outfit photography
- Women’s Denim Lookbook — studio lifestyle photography
The full range lives under apparel photography, and if your first drop leans on flat-lay, our flat-lay photography guide is worth ten minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many images does a new clothing brand need per SKU?
Four to six: front, back, a detail close-up, a fit shot (ghost mannequin or on-model), and optionally one styled scene per hero piece. That covers listing needs without over-investing before sales data exists.
What does a first clothing photoshoot cost?
By shot type: flat-lay from $12/image, styled from $25/image, ghost mannequin from $35/image, on-model from $800/day per photography team (model and makeup quoted separately). A 12-SKU launch with five images per SKU is a 60-image project — quote it against your shot list.
Can my factory send garments directly to the studio?
Yes — this is the standard route for brands manufacturing in China. Your supplier ships by domestic courier, we confirm arrivals with photos, and return, store or forward samples after shooting.
Do I need models for a first collection?
No. Ghost mannequin coverage across all SKUs plus on-model for two or three hero pieces is the cost-efficient launch pattern. Full on-model coverage makes sense once you know what sells.
How do I review photos if I am not in China?
All proofs go to an online gallery where you leave markup comments directly on images. Revisions follow your package, and nothing is final-delivered without your sign-off.
Planning your first collection shoot?
Send your SKU count and a few reference images — we will come back with a shot plan and a per-image quote. Factory-to-studio shipping is the standard route.
