1. Why Swimwear Is a Technical Category
Swim fabric fights the camera. Spandex and lycra carry a natural sheen that turns into harsh specular streaks under hard light. Ruching and ribbed textures disappear under flat light. Dark fabrics lose seam detail; neon prints clip color channels. And fit — the entire value proposition of swimwear — is invisible unless the garment sits on a body or a form.
On top of the fabric physics, swimwear listings carry higher buyer anxiety than almost any apparel category: fit, coverage, lining, strap adjustability. Your image set has to answer those questions visually before the size chart gets read.
2. Flat-Lay vs Ghost Mannequin vs On-Model
Three shot types cover swimwear, and they answer different questions:
- Flat-lay (from $12/image) — pattern, color and print clarity. Fast and consistent across a large color range, but says nothing about fit.
- 3D ghost mannequin (from $35/image) — shows structure: neckline depth, strap routing, back closure. The hollow-form effect keeps listings clean while proving construction.
- On-model (from $800/day per photography team, talent and styling quoted separately) — the conversion driver. Fit, coverage and movement only read on a body. For swim lines this is usually where hero images come from.
Most swim brands we work with mix the three: on-model heroes for the top of the listing, ghost mannequin for structure proof, flat-lay for color variants.

Beach and poolside settings add context that studio shots cannot: one-piece swimsuit beach photography, a poolside bikini and cover-up shoot, and a resort swim editorial show three different moods from our own production work. 3. Studio vs Beach: Choosing the Setting
Studio wins on consistency: controlled light, repeatable setups, fast color-variant throughput, clean backgrounds that marketplaces accept without argument. For catalog depth — twenty SKUs in four colorways — studio is the only sane route.
Location wins on desire: water, sun and sand sell the fantasy that swim runs on. The trade-offs are real — weather windows, permits for some public beaches, slower throughput, and light you negotiate with rather than command. Our recommendation for a first production: studio for the catalog base, one location half-day for campaign heroes.
Whichever setting, the retouching standard matters more for swim than most categories: fabric edges cleaned, fit lines respected, skin handled honestly. Over-retouched swimwear images drive returns.
4. Working With Our Studio From Overseas
Swimwear brands manufacturing in China can skip the international sample leg entirely: your factory ships garments to our Guangzhou studio by domestic courier, we confirm arrival with photos, and you review proofs online from your own time zone. Standard delivery is 5-7 business days per project.
Apparel photography is priced by shot type — flat-lay from $12/image, styled from $25/image, ghost mannequin from $35/image, on-model from $800/day per photography team with model and makeup fees quoted separately. All rates are starting prices. The full apparel scope sits on our apparel photography page, and the sample logistics are covered under near-factory photography.
Frequently Asked Questions
Flat-lay or ghost mannequin for swimwear listings?
Ghost mannequin usually wins for swimwear: fit and construction are the buyer's main questions, and the hollow-form view shows neckline, straps and closures without model costs. Flat-lay is still right for print-heavy color variants. Most swim listings we produce mix both, plus on-model heroes.
Can you shoot swimwear on models?
Yes — on-model swimwear shoots run from $800/day per photography team, with model and makeup fees quoted separately. Casting is matched to your target market and shared for approval before the shoot.
How do you handle shiny stretch fabrics?
Spandex sheen is a lighting problem, not a retouching problem: large diffused sources tame specular streaks, polarizing control keeps fabric color saturated, and texture comes back with directional soft light. We test the setup on your actual fabric before the batch starts.
Can our factory send samples directly to your studio?
Yes — most of our overseas clients' factories ship samples to our Guangzhou studio via domestic courier. We confirm arrival with photos, shoot to your shot list, and can return, store or forward samples after the shoot.
What is the turnaround for a swimwear shoot?
Standard delivery is 5-7 business days per project once the brief is confirmed and samples are in hand. Rush scheduling is available when a launch date is tight.
Planning a swimwear shoot?
Send us your collection size, the shot types you need, and a few references — we will reply with a shot plan and pricing. Factory-direct sample shipping is standard.
