Tri-Color Crossbody: Building the Set

Three-color products are exposure headaches. This crossbody bag had coral pink, white, and navy sections all in the same frame. Expose for the white and the navy goes black. Expose for the navy and the white blows out. The brief was clear product visibility for e-commerce plus enough creative styling to work on social.

We built a two-level set — light blue platform angled diagonally across a peachy-beige sweep. The platform was cut from foam core at about 20 degrees, then covered with matte paper to avoid reflections. This created the geometric interest and horizon line without adding props that would compete with the bag's own color story.

Lighting was a single large softbox camera-right at roughly 60 degrees off-axis. This created the directional shadow on the left that gives the image depth, while the diffused quality kept the contrast manageable across the three fabric colors. A white bounce card on the left lifted the shadows just enough to preserve navy detail without flattening the dimensional quality.

Metering was the tricky part. We spot-metered off the white section and underexposed by half a stop. This kept the white from clipping while maintaining enough exposure on the coral and navy to show texture. The histogram looked terrible — a spike in the highlights from the white, a cluster in the shadows from the navy, almost nothing in the midtones. But the final exposure preserved detail across the entire tonal range, which is what mattered.

Strap positioning took several attempts. Crossbody straps photograph flat and lifeless if you just lay them straight. We curved it across the frame with deliberate overlaps to show it's adjustable and three-dimensional. The curves also create visual flow that moves your eye through the composition rather than letting it exit the frame immediately.

Shot at f/8 to keep the entire bag sharp while letting the background soften slightly. The overhead angle shows all three color sections clearly and reveals the wave-shaped flap closure, which is a key design feature. Color grading was minimal — just slight saturation lift on the coral and blue to enhance the pastel harmony.

Project Specs: Tri-Color Crossbody Bag
Category Bags & Accessories / Women's Crossbody
Set Design Two-level foam core platform at 20° angle, light blue surface over peachy-beige sweep for geometric interest
Lighting Single large softbox camera-right at 60°, white bounce card left side for shadow fill
Exposure Strategy Spot meter on white section, underexpose -0.5 EV to preserve highlight detail while maintaining coral and navy texture
Challenge Exposing three distinct colors (coral, white, navy) without clipping highlights or losing shadow detail

Photography Insight: Multi-colored products with high tonal contrast benefit from exposing for the highlights and lifting shadows in post, rather than the reverse. Blown white fabric can't be recovered, but underexposed navy can be brought up with minimal noise if you've exposed correctly to begin with. The histogram will look wrong, but the final image will hold detail across the range.
