The brief came from a bicycle brand selling to the most demanding audience in cycling: triathlon gear obsessives who read tube profiles, not mood films. The subject was a Trek Speed Concept time trial machine, and the client needed its engineering argued frame by frame, from the TREK down tube lettering to the speed concept text on the aero bar and the BONTRAGER wheelset. We set one rule early: structure is the selling point, so the film would carry no plot, no scenery, only the bike in a black virtual studio.

Creative Concept

Triathlon buyers are the most exacting equipment crowd in the sport; they want the aerodynamic design itself, not riding atmosphere. So every shot serves structure: the integrated cockpit silhouette, the cross sections of the aero tube profiles, the shift components at the bar ends, with the caption “Integrated Handlebar” pinning the core selling point to the frame. A pure black gradient background removes every distraction and forces attention onto the engineering, which is exactly where this buyer already looks.

Production

The frame was modeled 1:1 from real bike reference, chasing every cross section change in the aero tube profiles. Carbon clearcoat is not plain black, so we built a fine flake high gloss material with anisotropic highlights that shift like silk as light sweeps the weave; the 700x25 sidewall text and TUBELESS READY markings were recreated as decals from photo reference. Lighting is a virtual three point rig: key for contour, fill for shadow detail, and a rim light that peels the black frame off the black background. Low camera angles give the product its stance. Final output: 1920×1080 Full HD, 29.97fps.

Production Challenges

1. Carbon fiber had to read as woven material, not plastic. Carbon is a dark woven composite, so the shader uses anisotropic highlights that travel along the weave and shift like silk when light passes. We tuned gloss and flake density against real frame photos until the reflection behavior matched; a plastic looking render would have failed the whole film.

2. A black frame disappears into a black background. Without a rim light the bike dissolves into the backdrop; too strong and the edge looks fake. We iterated the rim setup repeatedly until the frame outline held one clean, readable bright edge from every camera angle, then locked those values across the full shot list.

3. Tiny decals had to survive letter by letter inspection. Markings like speed concept and BONTRAGER were rebuilt as texture maps traced from real product photos, applied one by one. Gear obsessed buyers check every letter against the actual bike, so each decal was proofed at final render resolution before sign off.
