Retro glamour is a styling discipline: the curled updo, the glossy skin finish and the wet-look textures all have to arrive at the same decade or the frame falls apart. This session styled two black lingerie sets, a sequin plunge bra with a wet-look mini skirt and a lace-trim plunge with a shaping brief, on white cube props at our Guangzhou studio, lit for a polished specular beauty register. Both frames were delivered under a full commercial license for the brand's catalog and campaign use.

Photography Challenges

1. Glossy skin is a lighting decision, not a filter. The wet-sheen skin register of retro glamour comes from specular highlights placed along the shoulder, arm and leg. The key is positioned to rake across the body, and body oil is applied in passes, so the highlights land where the pose needs them.

2. Sequins and wet-look fabric fight the exposure. Sequin cups throw point highlights while the wet-look skirt mirrors the key. Exposure is balanced so sequins sparkle without clipping and the skirt keeps its black density, with the model angled so the skirt's reflection stays a texture, not a white sheet.

3. A white cube on a pale sweep needs edges. The white prop block against a light grey cyclorama can merge into one plane. The backdrop is metered a step darker than the cube and the cube's shadow is kept in frame, so the seat reads as a solid object.

4. Retro hair must survive the whole session. A curled updo relaxes under hot lights and repeated poses. Hair is set and pinned before the first frame and checked between compositions, because the updo is half of the period read.

Our Approach

The lace set frame.

The lace-trim plunge and shaping brief are shot seated in three-quarter profile, one arm raised to the hairline. The raised arm opens the torso so the lace edges and the brief's waistband both read at catalog zoom.

The sequin set frame.

The sequin bra and wet-look skirt are shot perched on the tall block with the gaze dropped down. The taller prop and the downward read change the register from catalog to campaign, giving the line its editorial frame.

Beauty lighting with discipline.

A raking key builds the glossy skin highlights, a subtle hair light separates the curls from the backdrop, and fill is kept low so the specular structure survives. The same map serves both sets for a coherent series.

Post-production for a glossy register.

Skin is evened while keeping the specular highlights intact, sequin sparkle is preserved rather than smoothed, and the backdrop is graded to a flat, consistent tone across both frames.

"Retro is a system: hair, gloss, fabric and light all signing the same decade. If one element breaks the period, the frame is just a costume." — Garbo, Director of Photography

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a retro-styled lingerie session priced?

On-model lingerie sessions are billed from $800/day per photography team, with model, makeup and styling fees itemized separately. Period styling like the curled updo is quoted into the session plan.

Can you handle the full styling, hair included?

Yes. Hair, makeup and wardrobe styling are planned with our in-house team against your line's reference material, and confirmed with you before the shoot date.

Can glossy and matte registers run in one session?

Yes. The light map is adjusted between wardrobe groups, so glossy specular sets and clean matte catalog sets can share one shoot day.

What is the turnaround?

Standard delivery is 5-7 business days from shoot day, including retouching and grade matching.

Who owns the images?

Your brand does, under a full commercial license covering catalog, campaign, marketplace and social use.
