A men's facial lotion photographed like the hardware it borrows from: chrome pump, diamond-knurled navy collar and frosted body, across sets that use shadow itself as the prop, from blind stripes to a shirt-and-tie silhouette, all cast in-camera for the campaign. This bottle sells a ritual to professional men, so the photography borrows its cues from watches and pens, not beauty. Across five frames we moved from documentation to mood: retail pair under striped shadow, pump macro, plinth portrait, the shirt-shadow narrative frame, and a capped-versus-uncapped comparison buyers use to judge the dispenser.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Men's nourishing facial lotion, 120ml airless pump bottle |
| Deliverables | Retail pair, pump macro, plinth portrait, shadow-narrative, duo states |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Styled shadows, dark plinth, minimal props |
| Usage | Campaign, listing slots and brand page |
Photography Challenges
1. Chrome that must look machined, not mirrored. The pump is mirror chrome. Lit broadly it reflects the whole studio as smears; the goal is one crisp dark line down bright metal, the read of a turned part.
2. Knurl texture at listing size. The navy collar's diamond knurl is the tactile premium cue. Soft light flattens it to a smooth ring and the cue vanishes at thumbnail.
3. Shadow styling without gimmickry. Cast shadows of blinds, then a shirt and tie, carry the narrative. A shadow one stop too dark becomes a horror prop; one stop too light becomes a mistake.
Our Approach
Single-line chrome discipline
The pump was lit by one strip softbox placed to draw a single dark reflection down the chrome, with everything else flagged out. Machined metal reads from that one disciplined line, not from brightness.
Raking light for knurl
The collar gets a hard, low-angle skim so every pyramid of the knurl throws a micro-shadow. At thumbnail the texture still reads because the geometry, not the contrast slider, creates it.
Gobo shadow casting
Narrative shadows were cast with real gobos between a hard source and the backdrop, metered two stops under the key. The shirt-and-tie frame was built layer by layer until the silhouette read instantly but stayed soft-edged.
"Men's grooming photography is industrial design photography with better ingredients. Light the hardware honestly and the skincare takes care of itself." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you photograph chrome pump dispensers?
With one strip source for one clean reflection line and flags everywhere else. Chrome is a mirror: the craft is choosing the single thing it reflects.
Can you show the dispenser both capped and open?
Yes, as a locked-setup duo. Buyers see the retail-closed state and the working pump side by side, which answers the packaging question in one frame.
Are styled shadow backgrounds done in camera?
Ours are. Physical gobos and a hard source cast real shadows, metered to stay soft and subordinate. Real shadows have a depth that drawn ones never match.
Grooming products that deserve hardware-grade photography?
Send the line. We will light the chrome, rake the knurl and cast the shadows that tell your buyer who this bottle is for.
