The client's reference images were luxury cosmetics ads — dramatic backlight, starburst effects, gold particles floating in black space. The product was a snail gel in gold-tone packaging. Mid-tier skincare trying to photograph like high-end. The gap between aspiration and budget shows up fast in product photography, but it's closeable if the lighting and composition are exact.

We built the shot in layers. Black acrylic base for the reflection. Deep gradient background lit from the center to create a warm halo that fades to black at the edges. The product was arranged with the jar open in front (showing the translucent amber gel) and the lid standing behind it (showing the brand graphics and the two sculpted snail embellishments). That composition gave us texture in the foreground and branding in the background without splitting focus.

The backlight was a small LED panel with a radial diffuser, positioned directly behind the product lid and elevated slightly. Bright enough to create rays, controlled enough not to blow out the product detail. We flagged the sides to contain the spill. A large frontal softbox at low power defined the gold finish and kept the gel from going muddy. The gel needed to look wet, thick, and translucent — three qualities that conflict under most lighting. The solution was a single strip light angled down onto the open jar, creating one sharp highlight across the gel surface to sell the texture.

The gold tone required precision. Too yellow reads cheap. Too orange reads like food. We shot at 3200K and pulled it back slightly in post, landing in a champagne-gold range that photographs like metal even though the packaging is plastic. Small white balance shifts make the difference between "premium" and "discount aisle."

Post-production: The particle field was shot separately — gold dust on black — and layered at two opacities: fine sharp particles in the background, larger blurred ones in the foreground to create depth. The radial light rays were real (the backlight created the structure), we just enhanced them in post to match the client's references. The atmosphere is fabricated, but the product lighting is all in-camera.
