AIMI Visual Media produced a 37-second vertical usage demo video for a home fragrance brand’s refill and main bottle set, mastered at 750×1000 for mobile detail pages. Shot in our Guangzhou studio on a Canon 5D Mark IV with a macro lens, the film answers the first-time buyer’s biggest question: how to refill without spills. Turnaround was 3-5 business days.

The brief was a refill and main bottle set in a black-and-white minimalist style: transparent body, black trapezoid cap, grey ribbon bow. The client’s core concern was education. Most first-time refill buyers wonder whether topping up is troublesome or messy, and that doubt sits right on the purchase path. We chose to let the demonstration do the talking: one steady hand guiding a thin stream of liquid into the bottle, no spills, no fuss. Answer the doubt first, then let the eco-and-value story land on its own.

Creative Concept
A refill product carries two built-in selling points, sustainability and savings, but both read as abstractions on a detail page. Our strategy was to make the demonstration itself the argument: the refill bottle lines up with the main bottle, liquid flows in a steady stream, nothing drips. Viewers reach both conclusions without a single slogan. The edit follows four beats: main bottle reveal, refill entrance, the pour, and a closing combo shot. The pour gets the longest screen time because it is the moment of proof. Removing doubt before building desire also cuts how-to questions to customer service.
Production
We shot on a Canon 5D Mark IV with a macro lens, because the fill point and the thin liquid stream needed close-focus sharpness a standard zoom would not hold. The lighting plan was a top-side key with a rim light, all locked to 5500K. The black trapezoid cap was the exposure trap: matte black reads as a flat hole if lit evenly, so the key came from above and to the side to give each angled face its own brightness grade, while a rim light from behind separated the cap from the white background. The grey ribbon got a small dedicated fill so its weave stayed readable. A white-to-grey gradient backdrop gave the transparent bottle wall its sense of thickness. Post covered the edit, grade, and subtitle packaging.
Production Challenges
1. Catching a clean liquid stream at the bottle mouth. The refill bottle’s mouth is small, so the stream turned ugly when poured fast and dragged when poured slow. We ran repeated flow-rate tests until we found the angle where the stream stayed thin and steady, then shot a dozen-plus takes and kept the best two or three.
2. Keeping the matte black cap from going dead. Matte black collapses into a flat slab the moment lighting gets lazy, and the trapezoid form loses all depth. We lit each face separately with the top-side key plus reflectors, drew a rim light along the edges, and fine-tuned local brightness in the grade so the black kept its layers.
3. Making the on-camera hand look effortless. A hand squeezing a bottle reads tense if the knuckles whiten. Our shoot assistant rehearsed grip angles a dozen-plus times before rolling, nails trimmed, jewelry off. That rehearsal is why the hand on screen looks calm and graceful, the detail demo videos most often get wrong.

Where the Film Lives
The vertical master slots straight into mobile e-commerce detail pages, Douyin, WeChat Channels, and Xiaohongshu (RED). Demo content performs best in the usage-instruction position of a detail page, where it holds attention far better than step-by-step graphics. For cross-border placement, refills are a mainstream format in Western markets and the film transfers directly, though liquid-category rules differ by marketplace, so check current platform policies. If a horizontal cut is needed for the brand website or trade shows, we shoot both orientations in the same session on two cameras.
Shoot the demo you would want as a first-time buyer. Answer how it opens, where it pours, and whether it spills, and the film is done. The hard part is thinking of every detail before the customer has to. — June — June, Product Photography Team Lead
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a fragrance refill video like this cost?
Product videos at AIMI start from $200 per finished video. A set like this one, refill plus main bottle with a subtitled master and a clean version, counts as one product group and is quoted by brief. Send the product details and our team returns an itemized quote the same day.
Is a dedicated refill demo video worth producing?
Yes. The biggest doubt for a first-time refill buyer is that topping up is fiddly or messy, and detail-page copy alone rarely clears it. A thirty-something-second demo that plays the whole process calmly lowers both service inquiries and returns, which makes it one of the most cost-effective content investments.
Does the hand on camera count as a model, and does it cost extra?
No. A hand-only demonstration is handled by our shoot assistant and carries no model fee. We rehearse grip angles and flow rate beforehand, with nails trimmed and jewelry removed. Only scenes with a face on camera involve a professional model, billed separately.
Will the black cap photograph as a flat black slab?
No. Matte black parts need each face lit individually: a top-side key for brightness gradation across the trapezoid faces, a rim light for the edges, reflectors for the dark areas, and local brightness tweaks in the grade. We confirm with trial frames before the real takes.
How do you capture the pour moment?
We test the flow rate repeatedly until we find the angle where the stream stays thin and stable, then shoot a dozen-plus takes and keep the best two or three. Backlight through the liquid keeps the stream outline crisp. Clients simply supply one or two extra sample sets for the repeated pours.
Who supplies the bottles and props?
The client ships the main bottle and refill samples so packaging matches the real product exactly. Studio tables, backdrops, and standard props are free to use. If you have original gift boxes or display stands, send them along; we issue a props checklist for confirmation before the shoot.
How long does production take?
A vertical demo like this runs 3-5 business days from script confirmation to delivery: one day for the plan, one studio day, and one to two days for edit and grade. Pour shots need generous takes, so the shoot day is scheduled loosely. A 48-hour rush is possible on request.
Can you shoot a horizontal version for our website at the same time?
Yes. We recommend a two-camera session covering both orientations: lighting and props stay put, only the framing is redesigned for horizontal composition rather than cropping the vertical. Tell us your platform mix at kickoff and we lock the version plan in one go.
Can multiple scents or colorways be shot together?
Yes. The usual approach is a full demo film for the hero SKU, with appearance and label close-ups for the rest, cut as swappable segments so each variant gets its own version. Shooting them in one session costs far less than separate bookings; just tell us the variant count.
How many revision rounds are included?
Two free rounds after delivery, covering subtitles, music, segment order, and grade tweaks; later rounds are billed by workload. Send time-coded notes in one batch and the editor usually returns the new version within 1-2 business days.
