AIMI Visual Media produced a 3 minute 15 second city image film for Jiangmen’s Chaoren Trail, the hiking route that links the Kaiping diaolou watchtowers. Shot in native 1920×1080 at 25fps with aerial and ground units across gardens, watchtower clusters, and a reservoir, the film was delivered in 7 business days.

Jiangmen’s tourism side needed a city image film that could carry two identities at once: the overseas-Chinese hometown and a walkable hiking product. The assets were real but scattered. The diaolou sit in villages kilometers apart, the Li Garden is a formal estate, and the Dongfanghong Reservoir is pure landscape. We chose the Chaoren Trail as the organizing line, the thread that turns separate stops into one route a viewer can imagine walking, and built the script as four movements from identity to resources to the trail itself.

Creative Concept
The strategy was to string beads on a trail. Jiangmen’s strongest tourism card is its qiaoxiang identity, the hometown that overseas Chinese sent money and architecture back to, and each diaolou is a piece of that history. Instead of giving every site equal airtime, we let the hiking route connect them: Li Garden’s ponds, the Tangkou watchtower cluster, the reservoir’s curves. A single caption, “Capital of Chinese Overseas,” sets the frame early, so every landscape after it reads as evidence of one identity.
Production
The garden section was covered in clear natural light to hold texture on the stone inscriptions and the Lingnan gate. Li Garden was shot from high aerial positions, since the relationship between lotus ponds, bridges, and diaolou only resolves from above. The reservoir used high level angles to layer islands against the shoreline. For the trail we went low and backlit, letting the boardwalk’s leading lines carry the frame until a pedestrian with an umbrella walked into silhouette. The grade stayed bright and saturated so blue sky and green foliage contrast the grey-white watchtowers.
Production Challenges
1. The diaolou clusters are spread across far-apart villages. We scheduled along the route’s own logic, one zone per day, pairing aerial and ground units in the same block so neither crew waited on the other. Transfer time between sites was written into the call sheet in advance, which kept the 7 business day schedule intact.
2. A walking trail is not visually spectacular on its own. We waited for human scale instead of staging it. When a pedestrian with an umbrella entered the frame against the light, the silhouette turned a plain boardwalk into a picture. Patience gave the trail its temperature; no model was placed.
3. Overseas-Chinese history slips easily into lecture mode. We let the buildings speak. The East-meets-West fabric of the Kaiping diaolou is the history, so captions state the city’s identity once and step back. The viewer reads the past from the architecture itself, and no narrator explains what the brickwork already says better.

Where the Film Lives
The master runs on the culture and tourism bureau website and in city image communication. It anchors promotion of the Chaoren Trail hiking route and plays in presentations to source-market audiences. A route-guide recut along the hiking line, with mileage and highlights marked per segment, can be produced from the same footage. Tourism content placement follows the sector’s publicity rules; check the target platform’s latest policies before paid distribution.
City films live or die on one thread. Jiangmen’s diaolou sit scattered across townships; the Chaoren Trail strings them into a necklace. Find the line first, and the scattered resources become a single story. — Garbo, Director of Photography
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the Chaoren Trail?
It is the hiking route in Tangkou that links Kaiping’s diaolou clusters, with wooden boardwalks running between villages and farmland. The film was shot along this line, so the path viewers see on screen is one they can actually walk.
Why do the Kaiping diaolou get so much screen time?
The Kaiping diaolou and villages are a World Cultural Heritage site and Jiangmen’s primary tourism calling card. Their East-meets-West architecture is physical evidence of the overseas-Chinese story, so the film gives them the aerial coverage and large-caption treatment they warrant.
Was the pedestrian with the umbrella a hired model?
No. The trail footage needed human scale, so we waited for a walker to enter the frame naturally and shot the silhouette against the light. Poetry in tourism films usually comes from patient waiting, not from staged placement.
How is a 3 minute city film priced?
Quoted per project, itemized from your brief: number of locations, aerial requirements, and post scope all shape the figure. Share your site list and usage plan through the contact page and we will return a line-item proposal.
Are there protection rules for filming the diaolou?
Yes. Filming at a World Heritage site follows conservation rules: drone work avoids restricted airspace and equipment never touches the structures. Respect for the site is a precondition for good footage, and we build those constraints into the schedule.
Is a city image film the same as a tourism promo?
The emphasis differs. An image film carries the city’s character and overall narrative, while a tourism promo sells specific products and routes. This film does both: the Chaoren Trail is the product, the overseas-Chinese hometown identity is the character.
How long does a project like this take?
This film took 7 business days, covering location scouting, multi-site shooting, and the fine cut. Hiking-route work is scheduled around daylight and crew stamina. Rush scheduling may be possible; confirm availability and any rush fee with our team first.
Can you also cut a hiking guide version?
Yes. We can recut along the walking route and mark mileage and highlights for each segment, which makes it more practical for visitors. In a city film’s distribution matrix, the image version and the guide version do different jobs.
What does the reservoir section add to a hometown-culture film?
It proves the ecological hand. Jiangmen’s overseas-Chinese culture is the headline, but the Dongfanghong Reservoir’s water and hills show the city’s natural resources. A complete city image needs both the human story and the landscape that holds it.
