AIMI Visual Media produced a 42-second product video for the LFT automatic watch winder, a high-gloss lacquered wooden box with a glass window and gold lining. Filmed at 1920x1080 on Canon 5D4 with a 100mm macro and dark-field softbox lighting over a motorized turntable, it shipped with music and clean versions in 3 to 7 business days.

LFT needed buyers to read material, craftsmanship, and running state inside 42 seconds. The product is a red wood-grain piano-lacquer box with a glass viewing window, gold interior lining, rotating watch seats, and a power port at the base. We set it on black with a motorized turntable to give the piece a luxury-counter feel: slow, deliberate, and fully product-led.

Creative Concept

Premium still-life video works on slow confidence: show everything, rush nothing. The turntable rotates at constant speed for the full view, the lens pushes in on lacquer reflections and wood grain, the lid opens to reveal the interior structure and window glass, and tight shots of the power port and indicator light close out the function story. Each shot holds three to five seconds; the black field locks all attention on the product, and the gold brand lettering reads expensive against the dark without a single flashy transition.

Production

Dark-field still life runs on controlled reflection. One large softbox, 5500K with CRI above 95, hung from a high front angle about 80 centimeters out, drawing one continuous highlight band across the lacquer. White boards on both sides returned edge separation, and black flags killed stray ambient reflections. The 100mm macro at f/8 kept the whole box sharp; shutter sat at 1/50 second to match the 25fps timeline, and ISO stayed at 100 for maximum detail. Turntable speed was tested against the frame rate, with three empty runs before recording, to prevent flicker and motion blur.

Production Challenges

1. Gloss lacquer behaves like a mirror. Every light and the camera itself would print into the finish, so the large softbox was positioned to paint one clean, complete highlight shape across the lid, and black flags masked the camera and all spare gear. This is the slowest part of the lighting build, and it decides the final texture.

2. A dark box on black can merge into a blob. Rim light does the separation: narrow beams along the sides and rear peel the edges off the background so the silhouette stays crisp. Black flags plus a slight pull-down in the grade keep the field pure black, which makes the layering stronger rather than weaker.

3. Turntable speed must be slow and perfectly even. At 25fps an unmatched rotation speed produces flicker and blur, so we tested the motorized turntable repeatedly against the timeline and ran three empty passes before the real take. The result is rotation that reads smooth and mechanical-free, with the working mechanism clearly visible in macro close-up.

Where the Film Lives

The 42-second length sits right in the golden window for detail-page video: it fits the main video slot on JD and Tmall detail pages, and the product-video slot on Amazon, subject to each platform’s latest policy. Premium-brand Moments ads and in-store screens take the same file, and the black-background footage doubles as brand-tier material whenever the client needs a more polished asset for presentations.

Black is not the lazy background; it is the hardest lighting exam in still life. One stray reflection in the lacquer or one grey patch in the field, and the buyer reads cheap. Texture management is the whole job. — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a still-life display video like this cost?

Product videos at AIMI start from $200 per finished video. High-reflection materials such as lacquer and glass take longer to light, and this project also covered a motorized turntable and two audio versions, so the final figure is quoted by brief. Ship us the product details and we itemize the quote.

How do you control reflections on high-gloss lacquer?

A large softbox acts as the key so the lacquer reflects one complete, attractive highlight band instead of scattered hotspots, while black flags hide the camera and spare equipment from the finish. This stage consumes the most lighting time and directly decides the texture of the final image, so we never shortcut it.

Can you show the winder actually running?

Yes, and we recommend it. The rotating mechanism and the indicator light are function selling points, recorded in macro close-up. Rotation speed is tested against the frame rate so the movement reads even and flicker-free on screen, letting buyers see the working state of the product at a glance.

Will a dark product disappear on a black background?

No. Rim lighting is the key: narrow beams along the sides and back trace the edges out of the black field so the box lines stay crisp. Grey contamination in the black is the real risk, and we prevent it with flags on set plus a slight pull-down in the grade.

How many units should we ship you?

One or two units are enough, with the power adapter included. Gloss lacquer holds fingerprints, so send a new or carefully cleaned unit, ideally with white gloves in the box. We keep lint-free cloths and gloves on set and handle the product with them through the entire shoot.

What is the turnaround for a still-life video?

Still-life shoots take half a day to one day, with post delivering in 3 to 7 business days. A 48-hour rush is possible. If your launch schedule is tight, ship the sample and place the order in parallel so shooting can start the day the product arrives.

Will wood grain and lacquer detail stay sharp?

Yes. The 100mm macro at f/8 keeps wood grain, lacquer layers, and metal fittings crisp, and the close-up setups exist for exactly this purpose. If your box carries a foil-stamped or engraved logo, that gets its own dedicated close-up as well; no brand detail is skipped.

Can we get a white-background version too?

Yes. One session can produce both black and white background sets: white suits platform main-image slots, black suits brand presentation. Dual backgrounds require a full relight, so the fee rises accordingly; state the need when ordering and we plan the lighting build for both.

Can price or promotion copy be burned into the video?

We suggest keeping only core selling-point phrases in the master. Pricing dates quickly and platform rules differ, so promotions should not live in the finished film. We deliver a clean no-subtitle version you can overlay with campaign copy yourself, after checking the latest policy of each target platform.
