White Hoodie: Keeping Whites Clean
White clothing on light backgrounds is an exposure balancing act. Push too far and the hoodie blows out into a featureless blob. Pull back and it goes gray. The client needed clean e-commerce imagery where the white stayed white but the fabric texture, seams, and chest patch remained visible.
We shot on medium gray seamless rather than pure white. This gives the white garment enough contrast to define its edges and form without requiring extreme lighting that would flatten the fabric texture. The gray also works better for online retail because it shows how the garment actually looks rather than creating an artificial high-key effect that customers won't see when they wear it.
Lighting was clamshell configuration — large octabox overhead angled down at about 45 degrees as the key, with a white reflector panel on the floor bouncing light back up as fill. This creates the soft, even illumination that shows fabric details without harsh shadows. The overhead angle defines the hoodie's shape through gentle shadows under the hood and at the pocket, while the bounce fill lifts those shadows enough to preserve detail.
The model's pose was simple: weight on back leg, one hand in pocket, direct eye contact. For apparel photography you want the clothing to be the focus, not the pose. Too much attitude and the viewer remembers the model instead of the product. This relaxed stance shows the hoodie's fit and length clearly while keeping the presentation approachable.
Shot at f/8 to keep the entire outfit sharp from head to shoes. The contrast drawstrings on the hoodie needed to stay crisp, and the distressed details on the jeans required enough depth of field to show the paint splatter texture. Color accuracy was critical — we set custom white balance to ensure the white stayed neutral rather than picking up any color cast from the lighting.
The technical challenge was maintaining separation between the white sneakers, white hoodie, and light background while keeping everything properly exposed. The key was metering off the hoodie fabric itself and slightly underexposing by a third of a stop. This preserved texture detail in the white while keeping the background bright enough to feel clean without going completely blown.
