The client was a formalwear seller whose signature piece is a white strapless dress with architectural folded draping across the bust, a gown that lives or dies on how its sculpture reads. We shot the study on our pure white cyclorama in clamshell beauty light: frame one works the model's crossed-arm line with a pearl statement ring and gold linear drop earring, frame two closes on the jewelry set styled against the dress's drape. Two frames, delivered with a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges
1. A white dress on a white cyclorama White-on-white formalwear is the exposure high-wire: the dress and the sweep share one color, and the only thing keeping the gown from floating away is light placement and the faintest rim. We keyed the model with a large frontal beauty source, lit the sweep separately a half-step brighter, and added a subtle rim to trace her shoulders and the drape's folded edges. The dress keeps its fabric texture and its silhouette, and the frame stays gallery-clean.
2. Sculptural drape flattens in soft light The folded bust panels are the dress's signature, and the same soft beauty light that flatters skin irons those folds flat. We raised the key's angle until each fold cast a soft gray shadow of its own, trading a fraction of skin perfection for the drape's architecture. The gown reads as sculpted fabric, not as a white tube.
3. Jewelry at beauty-frame distance The pearl ring and the drop earring are small objects asked to hold their own inside a portrait frame, and at f/2.8 they fall soft the moment the model's hand drifts a centimeter off the focal plane. We stopped to f/4, choreographed the hand positions to land on the plane, and shot the second frame as a dedicated jewelry close-up against the drape. Both pieces read sharp in their assigned frames.
Our Approach
Lighting
Position: large elevated frontal beauty key with low fill in clamshell, sweep lit separately a half-step brighter, subtle rim for edge separation. Settings: key metered for the dress fabric, background pushed to pure white by light, not by exposure. Why: white-on-white only works when the dress and the background are lit as two independent problems with two independent answers.
Camera and exposure
Canon EOS R5 on tripod, RF 85mm f/1.4L at f/4 for both frames, ISO 100, 1/160s sync. Why: f/4 is the compromise that keeps the drape's folds and the jewelry sharp in the same plane while the 85mm keeps the beauty framing compressed and clean.
Set and series
One cyclorama, two assigned frames, the crossed-arm portrait frame and the jewelry-detail frame against the drape. Why: a two-frame study earns its place by doing two jobs perfectly rather than five jobs adequately.
"White-on-white formalwear is where light placement stops being technique and becomes the whole picture: the dress and the sweep are the same color, so the photograph is made entirely of angles and ratios. That is the kind of frame our photography team finds the most honest to build." — Garbo, Senior Photographer

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a two-frame formalwear study cost?
On-model studio photography starts at $35 per image under the Growth tier, so a 2-image study like this one starts around $70, with model fees quoted separately. Styled campaign frames start at $80 per image under A+ Content. All rates are starting prices; our 2026 pricing guide explains the tiers.
How do you photograph a white dress on a white background?
As two separate lighting problems. The model is keyed with a large frontal beauty source while the sweep is lit independently a half-step brighter, and a subtle rim traces the shoulders and the drape's folded edges. The dress keeps fabric texture and silhouette; the frame stays gallery-clean.
How do you keep sculptural draping from going flat?
Raise the key's angle until each fold casts its own soft gray shadow. The same soft beauty light that flatters skin will iron architectural folds flat, so we trade a fraction of skin perfection for the drape's structure, which is the gown's actual signature.
Can small jewelry pieces stay sharp inside a portrait frame?
Yes, with plane discipline. We stop to f/4, choreograph the hand positions to land exactly on the focal plane, and dedicate a second frame to the jewelry alone against the drape. Both the pearl ring and the drop earring read sharp in their assigned frames.
How long does a beauty study like this take?
These 2 images were delivered in 2 business days: a half-day studio session, same-day culling, one day of retouching to a polished but natural finish.
Do high-key frames work for a formalwear listing?
Yes. The full commercial license covers store, marketplace, and advertising use, and the frames serve as hero and detail images on formalwear listings. We deliver high-resolution masters plus web-ready crops for each slot.
