Card Holder Product Photography

The client sells slim card holders to business buyers and commissioned AIMI Visual Media in Guangzhou, China to photograph two material series for its e-commerce listings: a glossy metal case in red, yellow, black, and navy, and a croc-embossed leather case in tan, green, black, and navy. Both series close with a black elastic band and ship in a black gift box. We delivered 11 styled images from our Guangzhou studio, all built as executive desk scenes on a warm wood table with a leather notebook and fountain pen as the recurring prop pair, retouched to one warm premium grade under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. A glossy case on a table photographs the ceiling. The metal series is mirror-gloss and the camera looks down at it. Whatever hangs above the set prints onto the case lid, so the ceiling over a flat-lay set is a lighting surface, not a bystander.

2. Eight colorways across two materials. Glossy metal and croc leather meter differently under the same light: the metal throws speculars, the leather eats light. Both series sit in one listing gallery, so the grade has to land one warmth level across 8 colors and 2 textures.

3. The elastic band hides the closure story. The black band is the product's whole mechanism, but a dark band on a dark case vanishes. Black-on-navy and black-on-black frames need a separation light on the band's edge, or buyers can't see how the case closes.

4. Desk props must stay props. The notebook and fountain pen set the executive context, but a gold nib pulls the eye harder than a small case does. Props enter the frame cropped or defocused, and the pen is never allowed to point at the product's logo.

Our Approach

Executive Desk Flat Lays

The color-range frames are shot top-down at 50mm, high enough that the 4-case arrangement stays square to the sensor. Over the set hangs a 4x6 foot diffusion panel as the ceiling, which is what the glossy lids actually reflect: one clean white gradient instead of the studio rafters. The notebook anchors the top of the frame and the pen the bottom, always cropped at the edge so they read as context at a glance.

Single-Colorway and Box Compositions

The solo scenes drop to a 30-45 degree camera height so the case shows its edge profile and gold pinstripe, not just its lid. For the red case and the croc series we brought in the black gift box as a second surface, leaning the case against it; the box's matte finish soaks up light and makes the case's gloss pop by contrast. The croc leather frames use a touch more fill, about half a stop up on the metal series, because the embossed texture goes muddy without it.

Post-Production and Retouching

All 11 frames grade to one warm master: white balance locked at 5000K, -15 highlight recovery on the glossy lids, +10 texture on the croc emboss, and 0.5px output sharpening. Dust on the gloss finish was cleaned at 200% zoom, and each colorway was matched to its physical case within DeltaE 2. Files were delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB in JPEG (quality 90) and WebP, ready for direct upload to Amazon image slots and A+ Content modules.

How do you control reflections on the glossy cases?

A flat-lying gloss case mirrors whatever is above it, so the set works under a 4x6 foot diffusion ceiling that reflects as one clean gradient on the lid. Fingerprints show at 2000px, so every case is wiped with microfiber and handled with gloves between placements.

Can you shoot two material series in one session?

Yes. The desk set and the light recipe stay locked while the products rotate through it. The croc leather series takes about half a stop more fill than the glossy metal, and that offset is noted once and applied to every leather frame.

Do you photograph the packaging as well?
