MFF Product Range — Lighting Dark Bottles and Light Boxes Simultaneously

This shoot presented a common technical problem in cosmetics photography: how do you light black bottles and cream-colored boxes in the same frame without blowing out the boxes or losing detail in the bottles? Most photographers solve this in post-production. We solved it in-camera.

The setup used a large overhead softbox for base exposure, then two strip lights positioned at 10 and 2 o'clock. The key was flagging those strip lights with black cards so they only hit the edges of the bottles and boxes, not the flat surfaces. This creates definition on the dark bottles while keeping the cream boxes from overexposing. The amber bottles got additional backlight to show the liquid inside.

We elevated products on white geometric blocks and added books at the base to signal "this brand fits into a creative lifestyle" without being literal about it. The draped fabric in the background creates those diagonal shadow patterns — adds visual interest to what would otherwise be a flat beige wall. Shot in our Guangzhou studio, delivered 12 images showing the full product range from multiple angles.

Technical note: When shooting products with extreme tonal range in one frame, edge lighting with flags gives you more control than trying to fix it in Photoshop. You maintain texture in both highlights and shadows, and the client gets images that work straight out of camera.
