Shower gel bottles photograph badly when full. The liquid shifts refraction, labels distort through the curve, highlights break up. This 750ml bottle had amber-orange body wash inside and a rose-gold pump on top. The challenge was making both the liquid and the packaging look premium in the same shot.
We started with prep. Fingerprints on plastic read as smudges under studio light. Dust settles into label grooves. Air bubbles cling to the inside walls and photograph as defects. Twenty minutes of cleaning: microfiber cloth on the exterior, tapping the bottle to release trapped air, rotating it under a test light to check for scratches. By the time it hit the set, the bottle was clean enough to pass a quality inspection.
The lighting had to wrap symmetrically because the composition was dead-center. Large octabox from above and forward at 45 degrees, washing the front label evenly. Two narrow strip softboxes flanking left and right — not for brightness, just to define the edges of the bottle. Without those side lights, a round bottle photographs flat. With them, you see the curve, the wall thickness, the way the liquid sits inside the container.
The rose-gold pump was plastic but needed to photograph like metal. That comes down to highlight placement. Too broad and it looks cheap, too narrow and it disappears into the background. We flagged part of the overhead light with a black card, leaving one clean specular line across the dispenser curve. Small detail, but it's the difference between mid-tier and premium in product perception. A white bounce card underneath lifted the shadow at the base so the entire bottle stayed visible.
Technical point: We shot at f/11 to keep the entire bottle sharp — front label, side seam, back panel — so the image could be cropped or reframed without losing detail. White balance pushed slightly warm (4000K) to complement the amber liquid instead of fighting it. The liquid became part of the composition, not a problem to hide.
