Two grooming jars in the same midnight world: a styling wax with its lid levitating above a peaked white formula, and a face cream resting open on reflective black, both wrapped in a controlled cobalt radial glow built in-camera on set. The line shares one packaging language: clear outer shells with cobalt inner jars. We built a single low-key world for both SKUs, then gave each its own trick: levitation for the wax to show density, a propped open lid for the cream to show texture. Same campaign, two product truths.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Men's styling wax; men's face cream, cobalt jar packaging |
| Deliverables | Levitation hero frame and open-jar texture frame |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Radial cobalt glow on black, high-gloss reflective surface |
| Usage | Campaign heroes, listing brand slots and social placements |
Photography Challenges
1. Lighting a double-wall jar cleanly. The clear outer shell refracts the cobalt inner jar and ghosts the logo. Light it wrong and every edge doubles; light it flat and the packaging loses its jewel-like depth.
2. Making white formula read as texture, not blob. Wax and cream are both near-white mounds. Without directional modeling they photograph as toothpaste, and the premium claim dies.
3. Levitating a lid believably. The floating-lid effect needs matched perspective, shadow and rim light. A lid that hovers at the wrong angle reads as a sticker.
Our Approach
Radial glow discipline
Both jars sit on gloss black against a background that fades from a soft cobalt center to pure black at the corners. One flagged source skims the acrylic edges, so the clear shell draws its own highlights without doubling the print.
Texture by direction
The wax was peaked with a palette knife and lit from behind-left so the swirl casts a micro-shadow; the cream got one pressed indentation and the same raking light. White on blue holds detail because the shadow does the describing.
Levitation composite
The lid was shot suspended on a clear rod at the exact jar angle, then composited over the open-jar frame with the support removed. Rim light on the lid matches the jar edge, which is what sells the float.
"Low-key work is subtraction: every light you add must justify itself, and the first thing to check is what the clear packaging added on its own." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you photograph clear double-wall cosmetic jars?
With one disciplined flagged source and a controlled background. The acrylic edges light themselves; the skill is keeping refraction from ghosting the logo and print.
Can you show product texture inside an open jar?
Yes. We style the surface with peaks or indentations and light across it, so micro-shadows describe the formula. It is the difference between premium cream and toothpaste.
Is the floating lid effect done in camera or post?
Both. The lid is shot suspended on a clear support at the true angle, then the support is removed in compositing. Physics first, cleanup second.
Grooming products that deserve a darker stage?
Send the line and its positioning. We will build the low-key world and the one effect per product that proves its texture.
