Three scented body lotion bottles with navy retail cartons in a charcoal flat lay

Tiered trio of body lotion bottles on a glossy black surface with satin drape

A limited-edition three-scent body lotion line shot two ways: a charcoal flat lay that shows every bottle and carton in the range, and a reflective black set where the trio stands tiered like a campaign trio should on launch day. More work from this category lives in our cosmetics photography portfolio.

Limited editions live or die on packaging, so this session covered both the full retail story and the hero story. The flat lay lays out the three pastel bottles with all six navy cartons for the completeness shot; the dark set strips it back to the three bottles alone, reflections and all.

Photography Challenges

1. Keeping nine objects honest in one flat lay. Three bottles and six cartons at matching diagonals can slide into clutter or fake-looking symmetry. The grid has to feel deliberate but physical.

2. Rendering foil-finished cartons without hotspot chaos. The navy boxes carry metallic foil and spot UV that flare under broad light. Every carton face needs its finish visible without mirror hotspots.

3. Balancing pastel bottles on a black gloss set. White, mint and ice-blue bottles on reflective black go either bridal-veil flat or sinkhole dark. The set lives in a narrow exposure band.

Our Approach

Flat lay on a felt grid

We built the diagonal on charcoal felt, which grips the cartons and kills micro-shifts between frames. Bottles anchor the diagonal and cartons flank in descending height, shot from directly overhead on a copy stand.

Flagged key for foil faces

A large flagged key skims across the carton faces at a shallow angle, so foil stamping lights up in a controlled sweep while printed matte areas stay readable. One small fill card keeps the navy from crushing.

Tiered trio in the gloss zone

On the black set the tall bottle stands forward center, flanked by the two shorter variants, all on a gloss surface with a satin drape closing the right third. We exposed for the bottle edges and let the reflection fall a stop dark, keeping the trio sculptural.

"A limited edition is packaging theater. Give buyers one frame that proves the whole range exists, and one frame that makes them want the hero." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you shoot full product ranges in one frame?

Yes. Range flat lays are built on a copy stand with every SKU and carton placed on a physical grid, so buyers see the complete edition honestly in one image.

How do you photograph foil-stamped or spot-UV boxes?

With a flagged key skimming at a shallow angle. The foil lights in a controlled sweep instead of exploding into hotspots, and the printed areas stay legible.

Do limited editions need different treatment than standard SKUs?

They need both ends: documentary completeness for the range, and a campaign hero for the lead variant. We plan the two frames as one session so the edition reads as a system.

Launching an edition that lives on its packaging?

Send the range and launch channels. We will plan the completeness frame and the hero frame as one session, cartons included.
