Two lipsticks, two formulas, two case languages: a translucent amber gel bullet in polished champagne square metal, and a deep burgundy cream bullet in black and gold, each with its cap laid behind in frame to carry the branding cleanly. Browse related work in our cosmetics photography portfolio.

Lipstick photography lives or dies on the bullet: its gloss, its cut edge, its color density. These two SKUs gave us opposite problems, a translucent gel that needs transmitted light and a dense cream that needs surface light, so each got its own micro-setup inside one consistent frame language.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Gel tinted lip balm; cream lipstick, square metal cases |
| Deliverables | Two hero frames, caps posed for branding |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Seamless white; cap laid behind the standing tube |
| Usage | Listing slots and brand product pages |
Photography Challenges
1. One frame language, two optical problems. The gel bullet glows or dies depending on transmitted light; the cream bullet reads only through surface speculars. A shared setup that flatters one betrays the other.
2. Metal cases without mirror chaos. Polished champagne and black-gold cases reflect everything. Each needs shaped highlights that say machined metal without showing the studio.
3. Caps that brand without cluttering. The laid-down cap carries the visible logo. It must be legible at listing size without stealing the standing bullet's role as hero.
Our Approach
Gel bullet backlight
The amber gel frame adds a small rear source firing through the bullet's translucent body, so it glows like candy while the angled cut edge keeps a crisp highlight. The champagne case gets two thin strips of shaped reflection.
Cream bullet surface discipline
The burgundy bullet is lit by a single flagged softbox that lays one controlled specular down its curved face, proving the creamy finish. Color density stays deep because nothing bounces into the pigment.
Cap as the second subject
Each cap lies horizontally behind the tube at a set distance, angled to camera. It reads as packaging context, not debris, because its position is measured rather than dropped.
"A lipstick bullet is a tiny monument. Give it the same edge discipline you would give a skyscraper and it will carry the whole frame." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you photograph translucent lip products?
With transmitted light through the bullet and crisp edge highlights. Translucent formulas die under frontal light; they need to be lit like glass, not like skin.
Can you keep metal cases clean of reflections?
Yes. Shaped strips draw the highlights we want and flags remove everything else. Polished metal in a product photo should reflect decisions, not the room.
Do bullet textures survive thumbnail size?
They are shot to. One disciplined specular down the bullet face separates cream from matte from gel at any size, which is exactly the information buyers need.
Lip products whose texture is the selling point?
Send the shades and cases. We will light each formula for what it is and keep every bullet readable at thumbnail.
