The client is a high-end Cantonese banquet house whose menu leans on tonic soups and premium seafood: fish maw, sea cucumber, abalone. These dishes are pale or dark, glossy or matte, and each one has a different failure mode on camera. All 8 frames were built on a dark reflective table with white and silver-rimmed porcelain, shot at the AIMI Visual Media studio in Guangzhou, China.

Photography Challenges
1. Golden broth dies under flat light. Superior broth reads as dishwater unless the surface catches a highlight. A small hard source skims the broth at a low angle so the surface carries a bright band, while the fill keeps the ingredients readable.
2. A pale soup on white porcelain needs separation. Almond cream soup in a white bowl on a dark table can float away. Raw almond props and a marble-veined saucer ground the bowl and tell the ingredient story at the same time.
3. Fog plus steam plus gloss is one too many effects. Frames that carry dry ice fog get a dead-simple composition, and frames with glossy sauce get the macro lens. The two treatments never compete in the same image.
Our Approach
The smoked opener.
Frame 01 sets the banquet tone: a lidded vessel spilling fog, a melon fan on the rim, and a stemmed fruit salad. Three heights, one light map, and the fog stays below the rim line so the food stays sharp.
Soup service with proof.
Frames 02 and 06 put the tonic soups in gaiwan and gold-rimmed bowls with the raw ingredients beside them: fig, apricot kernels, rock sugar. The prop answers the question every tonic buyer asks first: what is in it.
Seafood weight.
Frames 04, 05, 07 and 08 handle the premium line: fish maw, crab roe soup, sea cucumber, and a macro abalone. Rim light separates each dark body from the black table, and the broth band highlight carries the luxury read.
Post-production and delivery.
Retouching held the broth highlights, cleaned fog overshoot, and graded all 8 frames to one dark master. Delivered as 2000x2000px sRGB JPG plus WebP.
"Banquet food sells on sheen and steam. Give the broth one hard band of light and the dish starts to look like it costs what it costs." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a banquet menu set like this priced?
Styled creative frames start at $35 per image under our Growth package, so an 8-frame set runs from $280 including styling and retouching. All rates are starting prices, and the final quote depends on your requirements.
How do you photograph glossy dark dishes on black?
With separation light. A rear rim draws the dish edge, a skim highlight bands the sauce, and the backdrop stays unlit so the dish owns the frame.
How long does an 8-dish session take?
This set was delivered in our standard 5-7 business day window: styling tests, one shooting day, then retouching and grading to a single master.
Can you add white-background versions for delivery apps?
Yes. Pure white-background frames start from $12 per image under our Essential package, delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB with a full commercial license.
