Photography Challenges
1. Twelve dishes must feel like one restaurant. The menu covers meat, seafood, soup and dim sum. The dark wood table, white porcelain and light recipe stay constant, so every dish reads as a page of the same book.
2. Steam must read without hiding the food. Steam is shot against a dark backdrop with a backlight, so the wisps read clean without obscuring the dish.
3. Glossy sauces need separation. The braised and stir-fried dishes carry dark glossy sauces. A rear rim light separates the dish edge from the dark wood, and the sauce gets a skim highlight so it reads as sheen.
Our Approach
Meat and seafood block.
Frames 01-05 cover the braised pork belly, steamed fish, kung pao chicken, mapo tofu and Peking duck, each on white porcelain against the dark wood.
Soup and vegetable block.
Frames 06-08 add the hot and sour soup, stir-fried greens and sweet and sour pork, keeping the same light map.
Dim sum and group closers.
Frames 09-12 finish with the dumplings, fried rice, spring rolls and the full-range group shot for the menu cover.
Post-production and delivery.
Retouching cleaned steam overshoot, held the sauce gloss, and delivered 2000x2000px sRGB JPG plus WebP.
"A Chinese menu is a system of dark wood and white porcelain. Lock the table, lock the light, and let each dish own its frame." — June, Product Photography Team Lead
