About This Pendant Chandelier Photography Project

The Challenge

A lighting manufacturer expanding into overseas markets needed product imagery for their pendant chandelier collection that would appeal to interior designers, architects, and homeowners browsing platforms like Wayfair, Houzz, and their own DTC Shopify store. The collection spanned multiple styles from minimalist single-shade pendants to elaborate multi-arm brass chandeliers. The client needed each fixture photographed in a way that communicated both the design aesthetic and the quality of light output, a dual requirement that standard white-background shots cannot achieve.

Our Creative Approach

We chose a raw concrete textured backdrop to position the collection within a contemporary architectural context, appealing to the modern interior design audience. Each fixture was photographed illuminated from within, allowing buyers to evaluate both the physical form and the warm light diffusion quality. The shoot covered 6 compositions across the collection:

  • Single drum pendant with crinkled translucent shade against concrete, showcasing organic texture and warm glow
  • 3-light linear pendant with alabaster stone shades at staggered heights, ideal for dining table or kitchen island placement
  • 5-globe brass chandelier with frosted opal glass and mid-century modern curved arms
  • Detail close-ups highlighting material quality: metal joinery, shade texture, and cord hardware
  • In-situ styled shots suggesting real installation contexts for interior design mood boards

Lighting and Technical Strategy

The primary technical challenge was balancing two light sources: the fixture's own internal illumination and the studio lighting needed to reveal surface detail. We powered each fixture with dimmable bulbs set to warm white (2700K), then used carefully flagged studio strobes at low power to fill shadows without overpowering the fixture's natural glow. The concrete backdrop was lit separately with a subtle gradient to create depth. For the alabaster stone shades, we used backlighting to reveal the natural veining patterns that are a key selling point of the material.

Results and Brand Impact

The illuminated product imagery gave the client a significant competitive advantage on platforms where most lighting products are shown unlit against white backgrounds. Interior designers began saving the images directly to project mood boards, generating organic referral traffic. The concrete backdrop aesthetic was adopted as the brand's signature visual identity across their Shopify store, Amazon storefront, and wholesale catalog distributed to international retailers.
