Carved Jade and Quartz Pendant Photography

The client deals in carved stone jewelry: a green nephrite thumb ring in an archaistic style, a warm amber fruit pendant and several rutilated and clear quartz pieces on 18k and silver chains. They wanted still life imagery that respects the material. All frames were shot at the AIMI Visual Media studio in Guangzhou, China.

Photography Challenges

1. Jade reads dead without transmitted light. Nephrite shows its quality through translucency. A rear light source is feathered through the stone so the edges glow while the front keeps carving detail, proving the material without burning it out.

2. Amber shifts orange under the wrong balance. Amber goes muddy orange under warm studio light. A neutral 5000K key keeps the honey tone true, verified against the physical pendant during grading.

3. Rutilated quartz needs angled light to show the needles. The golden rutile needles inside the quartz only flash at specific angles. The pendant is rotated under the key until the needles catch, then the camera is locked to that geometry.

Middle frames suspend the amber and quartz pendants so light passes through the material, chains arranged in clean curves behind.

Closing frames move to macro for carving lines, rutile needles and amber inclusions.
