AIMI Visual Media produced a 158 second 3D technical animation for a robot vacuum brand, presenting internal structure and working principles for e-commerce detail pages, launch events, and technical explainers. Built in Blender and Cinema 4D, rendered in Octane at 4K 25fps, delivery took 15 business days.

The client needed rational buyers, the kind who compare specifications before price, to trust the engineering inside their robot vacuum. Photos cannot show a motor, a sensor array, or a circuit board sealed inside a shell, so we proposed a full 3D route instead of a live shoot: an exploded-view animation that suspends the machine, peels the housing away, and lets every core component take its own close-up. No presenters, no set; the precision structure is the protagonist, and visible quality is the argument.

Creative Concept
Robot vacuum decisions run on technical trust. A buyer choosing between lookalike machines wants proof of what is inside, so the strategy was structural visibility wrapped in a laboratory-grade mood: a gray-white gradient virtual space, the machine floating and rotating, the housing separating, and the internals unfolding layer by layer. Motors, sensors, circuit boards, and rollers each take a solo close-up. With no people on screen, the engineering itself carries the persuasion, which is exactly the language a specification-comparing buyer speaks.
Production
This was a 3D build, not a shoot. Modeling and animation ran in Blender and Cinema 4D, with Octane Render outputting 4K at 25fps. The virtual camera path was pre-programmed so the machine levitates and rotates, the shell separates, and the internal layers unfold in a fixed sequence: whole unit, housing split, structure expansion, then close-ups of the motor, circuit board, sensors, and fan. Materials follow a PBR workflow, metal roughness at 0.3 to 0.5, plastic at 0.6 to 0.8, lit by HDRI environment light with virtual studio fixtures, with depth of field simulating real lens blur. After Effects handled compositing, DaVinci Resolve the grade, and Premiere Pro the final edit.
Production Challenges
1. Dense internals are hard for viewers to parse. We paired the animation with text labels and guide lines, and gave key components such as the LDS laser radar and the brushless motor their own close-ups with a one to two second hold. Short captions in post name what the eye is seeing, so structure becomes function.
2. CG renders fail when materials read as toys. We ran a strict PBR workflow: metal roughness between 0.3 and 0.5, plastic between 0.6 and 0.8, HDRI environment light simulating studio fixtures, and depth of field mimicking lens blur. Believable surfaces are built from measured parameters, not from render presets.
3. Information density fights watchability. We fixed the total at 158 seconds and budgeted it in three blocks: 30 seconds of whole-machine display to hook attention, 90 seconds of teardown for the technical argument, and 38 seconds of reassembly landing on the brand mark. Pacing is a budget, and we spent it deliberately.

Where the Film Lives
The full 158 second version runs in the technical section of the brand’s e-commerce flagship detail pages, on the website product technology page, on screens in offline experience stores, and as the opening video at product launch events. The 60 second highlight cut serves Douyin feed ads, WeChat Channels promotion, Bilibili tech zone submissions, and Zhihu product-review posts. Key frames are extracted as structural diagrams for detail pages and technical posters.
technical products need complexity made simple, not simplified away. An exploded view shows what a camera never can, but every second of hold time is a decision; give each part exactly the attention it earns. — June, Product Photography Team Lead
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a 3D product animation take?
This project ran 15 business days: 3 for script and storyboard confirmation, 7 for 3D modeling and animation, and 5 for rendering and compositing. Rush delivery can compress to 10 business days; confirm scheduling with our team first.
How much does a 3D technical animation cost?
3D animation is quoted per project by complexity and duration: modeling hours, component count, render load, and the number of deliverable versions all move the estimate. Send your product drawings and target length, and we return a line-item quote with a schedule.
What should we provide for a 3D animation project?
Product 3D drawings are ideal, STEP, IGES, or OBJ formats preferred, plus a selling-point list, a technical parameter sheet, and brand VI guidelines. If no drawings exist, our engineers can model from photos and measurements, adding three to five business days.
Who writes the script, and how many revisions are included?
Our planning team drafts the script with three free revision rounds. Technical projects usually need an engineer’s review, so allow time for that. After storyboard sign-off, large structural changes mean rework, so confirm component order and emphasis early.
Can we specify which components and angles get shown?
Yes. At storyboard stage you name the priority parts and angles, and we confirm technical feasibility. Special treatments such as internal transparency, X-ray effects, or sectional views are all achievable, but the structural detail must be reserved during modeling.
Can live-action footage be mixed into a 3D animation?
Yes, shoot-plus-3D hybrid production is a common route. Live footage grounds the product in real use while 3D reveals what the camera cannot see. The two are planned together at storyboard stage so transitions and grading match.
Why 3D instead of shooting the real product?
A camera cannot film a motor sealed inside a shell. 3D exploded views show invisible components, control every angle, and keep lighting perfectly repeatable. For technology-led products where the internals are the argument, 3D is the honest way to make it.
Which platforms does a 158 second technical animation fit?
The full version serves e-commerce detail pages, the website technology page, and launch event screens. The 60 second cutdown fits Douyin, WeChat Channels, Bilibili, and Zhihu. Key frames double as structural diagrams and technical posters across channels.
