The client is a travel goods brand selling glossy hardside spinners, from aluminum-frame zipperless editions to a children's two-piece set with a cartoon cat print. Glossy polycarbonate is one of the hardest surfaces in product photography, and it is also what buyers use to judge shell quality. AIMI Visual Media shot the collection on the white sweep at its Guangzhou studio: 4 frames, every shell reflection placed on purpose.

Photography Challenges

1. A glossy shell is a mirror Polycarbonate at this gloss level reflects the entire studio, and unmanaged reflections read on the shell as dents, smudges, and dirt that do not exist. The lighting was built as a tent: two large strip softboxes placed so their reflections run as straight bright lines down the shell, with everything else in the room flagged dark. You do not light a suitcase like this, you light what it reflects.

2. Ribbed shells band under the wrong key The reinforcing ribs each catch a highlight, and if the key light sits off the rib axis the stripes light unevenly and the suitcase looks warped. The strips were aligned parallel to the rib direction, so every rib carries the same highlight from top to bottom and the shell reads as molded, not buckled.

3. White hardware on a white sweep Wheel hubs, lock faces, and the kids set's white character print sit close to the sweep's own white, and they vanish without help. The cases stand on reflective white acrylic that lays a soft mirror line under the base, and a flagged gradient keeps the floor just off pure white, so white-on-white edges separate without a painted outline.

4. Two products, one frame, one price The kids set pairs a spinner with a hand-carry vanity case, and the frame has to sell both without either blocking the other's print. The vanity case sits in the left foreground and the spinner stands right-rear, offset so each graphic reads fully. A buyer comparing sets sees the whole offer in one image.

Our Approach

Tent lighting for a mirror shell

Position: two large strip softboxes at front-left and front-right, matched in power, with black flags closing the gaps. Settings: 85mm at f/8 to f/11, ISO 100, camera at one-third of case height. Why: on a glossy shell the reflections are the surface. Straight, even strip reflections read as a clean mold line, which is exactly the quality signal a buyer is looking for.

A floor line for white-on-white hardware

Position: cases on reflective white acrylic, a black flag trimming the background gradient to just off pure white. Settings: the same 85mm frame low enough to keep the base reflection under the wheels. Why: separation should come from tone, not retouching. A soft grey floor line keeps white hubs and locks visible while the background stays marketplace-white.

A three-quarter angle that sells the frame

Position: each case rotated so the front shell and the aluminum closure frame both read, locks facing camera. Settings: 50 to 100mm depending on case size, deep depth of field for full-case sharpness. Why: the frame and latches are the upgrade argument over zipper shells. A flat front-on frame hides the feature that justifies the price.

"On a glossy suitcase you do not photograph the shell, you photograph what the shell reflects. Clean the room and the case cleans itself. — June" — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

How is white background luggage photography priced?

White background frames like these start at $12 per image under our Essential package, so this 4-image set starts around $48. Gloss-control tent lighting for ribbed hardside shells is quoted against shell finish and case count, since a mirror-gloss shell takes longer to flag than a matte one. All rates are starting prices.

Can your studio fit full-size suitcases?

Yes. The white sweep takes upright spinners through 28 inches with room for the tent flags, and cases are shot standing at travel height so wheels, handles, and frame hardware all read in one frame.

Do these frames meet Amazon main image rules?

Yes. Pure white background, the product filling the frame, no props or text: these 4 frames are main-image candidates as delivered. Styled and A+ companion frames for the same cases start at $35 per image under Growth.

How do you keep glossy shells from showing dents and smudges?

By controlling what the shell reflects instead of cleaning the shell. Strip softboxes place straight highlight lines down the ribs, black flags close the rest of the room, and the cases are gloved-handled on set. Most 'defects' in luggage photos are reflections of the room, not the product.

Can a two-piece set be shot as one frame?

The kids set here is one frame covering both pieces, arranged so neither print is blocked. It counts as one image, and it is the frame that sells the set as a set.

How accurate are the shell colors?

Saturated shells like this yellow and red are metered against a grey card and graded to one master, white balance locked at 5500K. What the buyer sees is the dye, not the tent.

What is the turnaround for a luggage set?

These 4 frames were delivered in 2 business days. The tent stays rigged between cases, so a multi-case collection moves at roughly one case per hour once the first shell is dialed in.

Your suitcase is a mirror. What do the photos reflect?

Tent lighting, rib-aligned highlights, and marketplace-true color from our Guangzhou studio, from $12 per white background image with a full commercial license.
