The client is an artisan maker selling hand-crocheted mini handbags, each one built from mercerized cotton cord with a layered rose applique and a faux pearl set in its center. Handmade goods are bought on evidence of the hand, so the photography has to prove the stitches, not hide them. AIMI Visual Media built a botanical still-life set at its Guangzhou studio: driftwood as the stand, dried pods as the echo, burlap as the ground, and 4 frames from full view to macro.

Photography Challenges

1. Openwork shows whatever is behind it The bag's filet crochet bands are full of holes, and whatever sits behind the bag shows through them. On the hanging frames the backdrop had to stay deep, clean, and several stops down, and a dark loose lining was placed inside so the holes read as shadow instead of clutter. Openwork punishes a busy background more than any solid material.

2. Two greens must not merge The bag is a warm chartreuse and its own leaf applique is a cooler kelly green, and under a warm key they drift together until the applique disappears into the body. The key was kept neutral at 5000K and the exposure set so the cooler leaves sit a touch darker than the yellow-green body, preserving a separation the yarn maker built in by hand.

3. Hanging without a hanger The bag's soft handles need support to show the silhouette, but a visible stand would break the handmade spell. The driftwood branch was chosen for a natural fork that holds both handles, and the bag's base rests on a second log, so the support reads as scenery. The trick works because the branch is rougher than the product, which keeps the eye on the crochet.

4. Handmade means imperfect, on purpose A stray fiber or an uneven stitch is part of the product's evidence, and over-retouching turns crochet into machine work. Retouching was limited to dust and one distracting loose end near the handle join. The stitch irregularities stay, because removing them would photograph a product the buyer will not receive.

Our Approach

A driftwood stand instead of a mannequin

Position: the bag draped by its handles over a forked dried branch, base resting on a weathered log, dried seed pods echoing the rose motif. Settings: 100mm at f/2.8, focus on the rose applique, background pods falling soft. Why: the support has to belong to the same world as the product. Driftwood and dried botanicals frame crochet as craft, where chrome or acrylic would frame it as inventory.

The interior as its own planned shot

Position: the bag opened flat on burlap, main zip wide, the coral polka dot lining and inner zip pocket facing camera. Settings: 50mm at f/8, a high oblique angle around 55 degrees so the pocket reads flat and true. Why: lining quality is the second question handmade buyers ask, and it cannot be answered by shooting the outside a little brighter.

Macro for the rose

Position: a tight crop on the rose applique, stem, and leaves, with the handle loop leaving the frame. Settings: 100mm macro at f/2.8 to f/4, focal plane on the faux pearl core. Why: the rose is the price justification. At macro distance the layered petals and the pearl's lustre prove hand work in a way a full-bag frame never can.

"Crochet is honest about light: every loop casts a shadow and every shadow shows the stitch. Rake the key gently and the texture photographs itself. — June" — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 4-frame artisan series like this cost?

Styled and detail frames like these start at $35 per image under our Growth package, so this 4-image set starts around $140, botanical staging from the studio included. All rates are starting prices, and small-batch makers can quote per piece or per collection.

Can you deliver before my market or launch date?

These 4 frames were delivered in 2 business days. A single-product artisan set is one of the fastest jobs we run, because one product and one set means the lighting is dialed once and the frames follow.

Do you shoot macro detail of handmade texture?

Yes, and for handmade goods it is the most important frame. The rose applique here was shot at 100mm macro with focus on the pearl core, so petal layers and stitch work survive zoom on any marketplace.

Will the photos show the inside of the bag?

The lining study is a planned frame, not an afterthought: the bag opened flat, coral polka dot lining and inner zip pocket facing camera at f/8. Buyers of handmade bags ask about lining quality early, and this frame answers it.

Can you find natural props, or do we supply them?

The driftwood, dried pods, and burlap came from the studio's prop stock, chosen to sit in the same craft world as the product. If your pieces use signature materials, like your own dried florals, send them and they get built into the set.

Are these images suitable for Etsy and handmade marketplaces?

Yes. The set frame works as the listing hero, the macro and interior frames answer the detail questions handmade buyers ask, and every frame ships with a full commercial license for marketplace, social, and packaging use.

How do you keep the two greens from merging?

The key is kept neutral at 5000K and exposure set so the cooler kelly-green leaves sit slightly darker than the chartreuse body, preserving the separation the maker built by hand. A warm key would merge them into one green.

Handmade texture, and the photos flatten it into machine work?

Botanical staging, macro proof of the hand, and lining studies from our Guangzhou studio, from $35 per styled image with a full commercial license.
