One hair repair oil, two opposite moods: a bright water set that sells freshness and a dark gold satin set that sells luxury. The faceted gradient glass bottle had to stay readable in both, from its amber shoulder to its near-black base. For similar projects, explore our cosmetics photography services page.

The client needed campaign range for a single SKU: one frame light and clean for daytime retail channels, one frame dark and rich for premium placements. We built both sets around the same hero bottle and shot them back to back, so the product geometry stays identical across the pair.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Hair repair essential oil, 90ml glass pump bottle |
| Deliverables | Water-set hero frame and gold satin luxury frame |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | White plinth over rippling water; champagne satin folds with gobo light |
| Usage | Retail listing slots and premium campaign placements |
Photography Challenges
1. Exposing a gradient bottle end to end. The glass runs from translucent amber at the shoulder to near-opaque black at the base. One light logic cannot serve both: the amber blows out before the base separates from a dark set.
2. Controlling the gunmetal pump cap. The tall chrome cap mirrors the whole studio. Untreated, it fills with messy reflections; over-flagged, it turns matte and reads as cheap plastic.
3. Making two sets feel like one campaign. Water caustics and gold satin share nothing visually except the product, so the bottle angle, fill ratio and retouch grade had to be locked across both.
Our Approach
Water-set build
The bottle stands on a matte white plinth above a shallow water tray, lit high-key so the ripples read as pale blue caustics. We exposed for the amber shoulder and lifted the base a half stop with a low reflector, keeping the gradient honest.
Gold satin set
On the dark set we swapped to flagged strobes firing through gobo masks, throwing hard-edged triangular beams across charcoal. The satin was folded into sharp ridges first and the bottle nested after, so the fabric leads the eye to the product.
Cap reflection discipline
A strip softbox at camera-left draws one clean vertical highlight down the chrome cap on both sets. Everything else is flagged out, so the metal reads as polished hardware instead of a mirror of the room.
"A gradient bottle is two products in one light. Meter the lightest glass first, then decide how much shadow the base can keep before it disappears." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one product get both bright and dark campaign looks?
Yes. We lock the product angle and camera height, then rebuild the set around it. The pair reads as one campaign because the bottle never changes, only the world around it.
How do you photograph gradient or tinted glass?
Expose for the lightest part of the glass and recover the rest with reflectors, not global brightening. That keeps color density honest and avoids the washed-out look buyers distrust.
Do water backgrounds work for marketplace images?
As secondary and brand slots, yes. For main images we deliver a pure white variant from the same session to stay within marketplace rules.
One SKU, more than one mood to sell?
Send the product and the channels it lives on. We will map how many looks one session can honestly carry and quote the set builds.
