Heritage Skincare: Bridging Modern and Traditional

The client's brand story was about blending traditional Asian ingredients with contemporary skincare science. The visual challenge was making that concept tangible without turning the shot into a cultural cliché. Too many traditional elements and it looks like a museum display. Too minimal and you lose the heritage narrative entirely.

We used traditional props as accent layers rather than the main focus — geometric gold frames suggesting Chinese lattice windows, ceramic vessels referencing apothecary tradition, ornate containers that nod to tea ceremony aesthetics. These sit behind the products, visible but deliberately blurred through shallow depth of field. The modern chrome and frosted glass packaging stays sharp and prominent.

The white circular platform was essential for creating separation. Without it, the products would visually merge with the props and the whole composition would flatten. The pedestal lifts them both literally and conceptually, establishing hierarchy: the products are contemporary, the heritage is supporting context.

Lighting had to handle four different material challenges simultaneously: chrome caps that reflect everything, frosted glass that needs to show internal volume, matte labels that require even illumination, and ceramic props with varied surface textures. We used a large overhead softbox positioned slightly front-center to create soft, diffused light that wraps around all the surfaces. A white bounce card below the platform lifted shadows without creating a second light source that would confuse the chrome reflections.

Shot at f/5.6 to keep all three products sharp while letting the background props blur into context. Focus point was on the center spray bottle, which sits at the middle depth plane. The arrangement is diagonal left-to-right in ascending height order, creating visual flow and preventing the static feel of a straight line.

The chrome caps were the main technical concern. Any visible light source or camera reflection would break the premium aesthetic. We positioned the softbox high enough that its reflection fell on the top curve of the caps where it reads as natural highlight rather than obvious gear. Flagged the sides to prevent bounce from the studio walls showing up as secondary reflections.

Color grading emphasized the cool-warm contrast: the products stayed neutral silver and white, while the gold frames and burgundy ceramics were warmed slightly to enhance the traditional feel. This contrast reinforces the brand narrative visually — modern formulation rooted in heritage ingredients.
