The client came to us with a straightforward brief: white background product shots for their new lip balm line launching on Tmall. Standard e-commerce photography. We delivered that, but halfway through the shoot, their marketing lead asked if we could do "something more" for their brand social channels.

The challenge was the product itself. Transparent balm in metallic tubes — beautiful in person, tricky to photograph. Too much light and the metal blows out. Too little and the balm looks dull. The client wanted to show the product's premium quality without making it look clinical.

We started with the basics: clean white background shots with the tubes arranged at varying heights. Soft overhead lighting to keep the metal reflections controlled, with a slight backlight to make the balm glow from within. That gave them the hero images they needed for listings.

For the lifestyle shots, we switched to a warm peach-toned backdrop. The client's brand identity was all about warmth and approachability, so we matched that with the background color. Added geometric white platforms to create depth — the product sits on one level, the packaging on another. It's a simple trick but it makes the composition feel intentional rather than staged.

The flat-lay was the most experimental. We used a white wave-textured board as the base (found it in our prop storage, originally bought for a furniture shoot). Arranged the tubes diagonally with a small cream jar and the packaging. The wave texture added just enough visual interest without competing with the product.

Client reported the lifestyle shots outperformed their previous product photography by 2.3x on Instagram engagement. They ended up using the flat-lay as their WeChat Moments ad creative for the launch campaign.

Photography Insight: When shooting transparent or translucent cosmetics products, backlighting is essential to show the product's true color and texture. But it needs to be subtle — too strong and it looks artificial. We typically position a small LED panel behind and slightly below the product, flagged to prevent lens flare.
