A men's footwear label sent a classic deck silhouette in two colorways, deep burgundy and chestnut brown: moc-toe construction with contrasting white stitching, leather laces through gold eyelets, and white siped rubber soles. The brief called for a pure black background with a reflective floor, so the shoe reads as an object of craft rather than a catalog placeholder. All 8 frames, including close detail passes on the moc toe, the eyelets and the sole, were shot in one set build in our Guangzhou studio and delivered in 5 business days with a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Burgundy leather clips the red channel before it looks red. Digital sensors overload in the red channel first, and a deep red shoe on black is the classic victim: the leather flattens into a waxy orange-red and the grain vanishes. We metered with the red channel histogram on screen, not the white one, and pulled the key down until the red channel held detail. In plain terms: we exposed for the red leather specifically, then lifted everything else back with fill. That is how the burgundy reads as wine rather than plastic.

2. White stitching on dark leather wants to glow. The moc-toe seam is thin white thread against dark burgundy, the highest-contrast edge in the frame. Spill light onto the seam and it halates, meaning it blooms into a fuzzy bright line that looks like a retouching error. We flagged the key so the direct light rakes across the toe from a low angle, putting the stitching in gentle relief instead of blowing it out, and kept the fill one stop lower than instinct suggests.

3. Sole-forward frames flip the exposure problem. Several frames show the white siped sole facing the camera while the burgundy upper sits behind it. The sole is now the brightest object and the upper the darkest, the reverse of the hero frames. We added a focused spot for the upper, a small light just for the leather, so the sole keeps its tread texture without the upper sinking into the black set. Two light zones, one frame.

Our Approach

Pure black set with a raking key

The stage is matte black behind and gloss black below. The key is a long softbox set low and behind the shoe, raking light across the moc toe so the stitching casts a micro-shadow and reads in relief. A front fill card, one stop under, keeps the vamp readable. The gloss floor adds a controlled reflection that doubles the silhouette without doubling the clutter.

Detail passes: moc toe, eyelets, sole

Detail frames moved the camera close on the toe seam, the gold eyelets with leather laces, and the siped sole tread. For the eyelets we used a smaller light source on purpose: metal needs a defined highlight to look machined, and a big soft source turns gold eyelets into dull beige rings. Focus sat on the nearest eyelet row, with the depth of field, the zone of acceptable sharpness, ending just behind the heel.

Post-production: hold the wine, true the white

Grading protected the burgundy hue first: a narrow hue adjustment kept the leather between red and violet without drifting orange. The white stitching and sole were graded to neutral, since warm whites make rubber look old. The black background went to true black, then we restored a half stop of edge around the silhouette so the shoe never touches pure void. Delivered at 2000x2000px under a full commercial license.

"Burgundy is a liar under warm light: it photographs orange until you meter the red channel, and then suddenly it is wine again." June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a black-background boat shoe set like this cost?

The 8 still-life images here are in the Growth tier starting at $35 per image, so the set starts around $280. If your listing also needs white-background versions for Amazon's main slot, those start at $12 per image under the Essential package. All rates are starting prices; the final quote depends on your shot list.

Are burgundy and brown colorways the same price?

Yes. Colorways shot in the same set build, like this burgundy and brown pair, share one lighting recipe and one session. You pay per delivered image, not per colorway setup, so adding a second color usually adds only the extra frames you select.

Can you match a dark, premium brand aesthetic across our whole line?

That is what this set build is for. We lock the background, light map and grade recipe, then run your line through it style by style. The result is a catalog where every shoe shares the same black, the same shadows and the same reflection behavior, which is what reads as a brand aesthetic.

Do you shoot sole and construction detail frames?

Yes, and this project is a good example: moc-toe stitching, gold eyelets with leather laces, and the siped sole tread each got dedicated close frames. Detail frames are where leather quality is actually proven online, and we plan them into the shot list at the quoting stage.

How do you keep the white siped sole detailed against the black set?

The sole and the dark upper are metered as two separate zones, and the upper gets its own small light in sole-forward frames. In post the sole is graded to neutral white with the tread texture intact. The sole frames in this set show the method clearly.

What resolution and license do we receive?

This set was delivered at 2000x2000px, covering Amazon zoom and standard DTC templates, with full-resolution masters included. Every project ships with a full commercial license for listings, ads and social use, with no per-platform fees.

How long does a two-colorway still-life set take?

This 8-frame project was delivered in 5 business days from product arrival. Most single-silhouette still-life sets run 3 to 5 business days depending on frame count. Share your launch date in the inquiry and we will confirm the schedule with the quote.
