A men's footwear brand selling on Amazon sent two colorways of its summer sandal: black nubuck and sand khaki nubuck, both with dual hook-and-loop instep straps, an adjustable slingback, contrast stitching, and a solid black outsole. The brief wanted an unmistakable summer-beach read with hard sunlight, the kind of light buyers associate with holidays, not the flat softbox look of every competing listing. We built a beach inside the studio: mixed gravel pebbles, scattered seashells, white porous coral stones, a flat light-blue backdrop, and a real palm frond casting sharp shadows under a bare-bulb sun. Both colorways ran through the same six compositions, delivered in 4 business days.

Photography Challenges

1. Hard sunlight is a liar if you fake it wrong. Real sun is a single small hard source, and it produces razor-edged shadows all falling in one direction. The common shortcut is a softbox pushed closer, which gives soft vague shadows and instantly reads as studio. We used a bare reflector head as the sun: one small hard source, high and to the side, so the palm frond throws crisp leaf shadows across the blue backdrop and the sandal casts one clean shadow, exactly what a buyer's eye expects from a beach photo.

2. Nubuck turns velvety black under hard light. The black nubuck upper has a directional nap: lit from the wrong side it goes pitch black and every strap edge disappears; lit with the nap it shows a soft grey-bloom texture. We checked nap direction per composition and rotated the shoe, not the light, because the sun position was fixed by the palm shadow. Where the black straps still threatened to merge, a thin white fill card at ground level bounced just enough sun back to redraw the edges.

3. Sand khaki against pale gravel is near-camouflage. The sand colorway sits within a stop of the pebble tone, so the shoe can vanish into its own set. We anchored each composition with the white coral stones as contrast blocks, placed the sandal so its black footbed and outsole break against the pale gravel, and let the palm shadow stripes pass behind the shoe rather than across it, keeping the upper clean.

4. Six frames of gravel that must not look swept. A loose gravel surface records every disturbance, and after moving shoes between compositions the set starts to show comb marks and footprints. We raked and re-scattered the pebbles between setups, kept the shells and coral on marked positions, and shot a clean plate of each arrangement as insurance for retouching.

Our Approach

Studio-built beach under one hard sun

The set is a gravel tray dressed with shells and coral stones, a seamless light-blue backdrop for the sky, and a palm frond clamped at frame left. A bare reflector head high camera-right plays the sun, positioned once and never moved, so every shadow in the set agrees. Camera on a 70-200mm at around 100mm, low to the gravel, so the sandal sits in the scene like a product on a real beach rather than floating over a backdrop.

Colorway pass with fixed sun

Black nubuck first, sand second, same six compositions marked on the gravel tray. Because the sun position never changed, the palm shadows fall identically across both colorways, and a buyer toggling between black and sand sees the same beach, just a different shoe. Exposure per colorway was set off the grey card: black nubuck metered to keep nap texture, sand metered to keep stitching from burning out.

Post-production and delivery

Retouching stayed minimal: stray comb marks in the gravel cleaned against the insurance plates, nubuck nap left untouched, blue backdrop evened out. Both colorways matched to the physical samples under a D65 lamp, because sand khaki drifts yellow under the hard warm source. Delivered as 2000x2000px sRGB JPEG quality 90 plus WebP, named per colorway for the seller's variation listing.

"One hard source, honestly placed, sells summer better than any filter: the shadow has to agree with itself before the buyer agrees with the photo." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a beach-styled sandal set cost?

These 6 styled scene images start at $35 per image under the Growth package, so a set like this starts around $210. White-background packshots for the main listing slot start at $12 per image under Essential. All rates are starting prices, and the final quote follows your shot list.

What turnaround does a two-colorway styled shoot need?

This 6-image set was delivered in 4 business days from sample arrival. The sun position and set stay fixed across colorways, so the second colorway is a product swap plus metering check, not a rebuild.

Are these compliant with Amazon's image rules?

The files are 2000x2000px sRGB with no borders, watermarks, or added text, so they clear Amazon's technical spec for secondary slots and A+ Content. The main slot requires a pure white background, which we can add at $12 per image.

Is that real sunlight in the photos?

It is a single hard studio source positioned to behave exactly like the sun: small, high, and directional, so all shadows fall in one direction with crisp edges. That is what makes the beach read as outdoors instead of a softbox set. The palm frond is real, and its shadow is cast, not added in post.

How do you keep black nubuck from going flat?

Nubuck has a directional nap, so we rotate the shoe until the light runs with the grain, which shows as a soft grey bloom instead of a black hole. A low white fill card then bounces a sliver of light back to redraw the strap edges. The texture you see is from capture, not post.

Can both colorways share the same beach set?

They did. The set, sun position, and prop marks stay fixed; only the shoe and the metering preset change. Black and sand versions end up on the same beach with identical palm shadows, which keeps your variation listing coherent.

Can you build a different scene for our brand, like poolside or boat deck?

Yes. The beach is one of the studio's themed set builds; poolside, deck wood, and garden scenes use the same fixed-sun method. Scene changes are styling work, so the per-image rate stays the same.
