A children's footwear brand selling on Amazon sent three sandal designs from its summer line: a royal blue waterproof slingback with layered star appliques, a white and tan open-toe style with a gold-tone emblem, and a tan-navy sport sandal with hook-and-loop straps. The catalog buyer here is a parent, so the brief asked for playful but tidy styling that keeps the shoe as the clear subject. We built one flat-lay set on a light wood tabletop with a small cast of toys: a miniature police car, wooden number blocks, a greeting card, dried flower sprigs, and a little storage crate. All eight frames were shot overhead in one session, delivered in 4 business days.

Photography Challenges
1. Glossy molded plastic glares under softbox light. The blue waterproof design is injection-molded EVA with a glossy surface, and a large overhead source paints one broad white sheet across the straps, erasing the star appliques and the molded stitch texture. We raised the source and narrowed its spread so the highlight breaks into controlled lines that follow the strap curves, and the bright royal blue keeps its saturation instead of washing to pale plastic.
2. Three designs, eight frames, one visual family. A blue jelly sandal, a dressy white-tan sandal, and a rugged sport sandal do not naturally look like they belong in the same catalog. The shared wood surface and the same rotating toy props are what tie them together: a parent scrolling the listing feels one brand, not three suppliers. Camera height, overhead angle, and prop radius were locked across all eight frames.
3. Small shoes leave big empty frames. Kids' sandals are 15cm long, and shot at the same framing as adult shoes they drown in negative space. We tightened the crop and used the props as a measured border: police car at one corner, blocks at another, dried sprigs breaking the edges. The set stays airy, but the shoe still fills enough pixels to survive Amazon's zoom threshold.
4. Props must read playful, not messy. Toys in a product frame are one wrong placement away from clutter. Our rule for this set: every prop sits at least one palm-width from the shoe, nothing touches the product, and each prop points inward. The eye lands on the sandal first and reads the toys as a playground context second.
Our Approach
Overhead catalog flat lay
Everything was shot straight down on a 50mm at f/8, camera on a copy-stand arm over the wood tabletop, so all three designs share identical geometry and a parent comparing styles sees the same angle every time. One large softbox high and slightly behind-left gives soft contact shadows that ground the sandals without hiding strap details. Pairs are arranged toe-out or with one shoe propped on the other, so the footbed print and the outsole tread both show somewhere in the set.
Toy-prop set dressing
The prop cast was chosen to say 'boy's summer' without licensing anyone's characters: a generic police pickup, plain wooden number blocks, a thank-you card, dried botanical sprigs, and a stained wood crate. Each frame rotates two to three props so the eight images feel varied while staying one family. The wood tabletop's warm tone is deliberate: it flatters both the cool royal blue and the tan leather-look straps.
Post-production and delivery
Royal blue needed saturation protection: plastic blue shifts toward cyan under softbox light, so we matched to the physical sandal under a D65 lamp. White-tan frames got a highlight check so the white straps kept texture. Dust specks on the molded footbeds were cleaned at 100%. Delivered as 2000x2000px sRGB JPEG quality 90 plus WebP, named per design and color for the seller's variation listings.
"Catalog consistency is the whole job with kids' lines: same light, same stage, same cast of props, and three different shoes become one brand." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a kids' footwear catalog set cost?
These 8 styled scene images start at $35 per image under the Growth package, so a set like this starts around $280. White-background packshots for main listing slots start at $12 per image under Essential. All rates are starting prices; the final quote depends on how many designs and colorways you send.
How long does a multi-design shoot like this take?
This 8-image set covering 3 designs was delivered in 4 business days from sample arrival. Because every design shares the same locked set and camera, swapping products takes minutes and most of the day goes to styling and checks, not rigging.
Are these images ready for Amazon's kids' footwear listings?
Files export at 2000x2000px sRGB with no borders, watermarks, or added text, meeting Amazon's technical spec and zoom threshold. Styled scenes go to secondary slots and A+ Content; the main slot needs a pure white background, which we can add at $12 per image.
Do you supply the toys and props, or do we?
The studio prop library covers generic toys, blocks, cards, and botanicals, which is what this set uses. If you want your own packaging, hangtags, or branded items in frame, ship them with the samples and we will style around them. We avoid licensed characters so your images have no third-party IP issues.
Can several designs and colorways share one consistent look?
That is exactly how this set was built: locked overhead camera, same wood surface, same prop cast rotated per frame. A new design or colorway drops into the identical setup, so your whole summer line reads as one brand across the catalog.
How do you photograph glossy waterproof materials without glare?
By narrowing the light's spread and raising its angle, so the highlight breaks into thin lines that follow the straps instead of one broad white sheet. The molded texture and appliques stay visible, and the bright plastic color keeps its saturation.
We sell the same sandal in five sizes. Do you shoot every size?
Usually one representative size per design, most often the mid-range kids' size, because proportions read best at that scale. If your listing needs size-comparison frames, we can shoot the smallest and largest together with a scale reference.
