A lighting manufacturer shipped three wall sconce models — a brass-and-opal-glass fixture, a minimalist round-backplate design, and an industrial layered-shade model — to AIMI Visual Media's Guangzhou studio for e-commerce imagery. The brief called for installed, powered, in-situ shots that show each fixture exactly as it will look on a customer's wall, plus detail frames covering finish, shade texture, and mounting hardware for Amazon A+ content and Wayfair catalog listings.

Photography Challenges

• Balancing the lit shade against the fixture body. A powered sconce creates a 3-4 stop exposure gap between the glowing shade and the surrounding wall — a single exposure either blows out the glass or loses the metal finish in shadow.
• Rendering three different metal finishes accurately. Polished brass, matte black, and galvanized silver each reflect light differently; one lighting setup cannot flatter all three without adjustment.
• Showing true color temperature. A 2700K warm bulb photographs orange under daylight-balanced strobes and yellow-white under tungsten — color temperature must be controlled so the listing image matches what the buyer receives.
• Hard-mounting fixtures mid-shoot. Each model has a different backplate and wiring configuration; mounting, leveling, and powering three fixtures on the same wall section without visible patching requires pre-drilled anchor points.
• Keeping concrete texture consistent. The raw concrete wall set reads differently under each fixture's throw pattern, so wall texture had to stay visually consistent across the series for catalog cohesion.

Our Approach

In-Situ Wall Scene Shots

Each sconce was hard-mounted on our pre-wired concrete wall section and powered with 2700K bulbs. We lit the scene with a single large softbox at 45 degrees camera-left at low power, letting the fixture's own glow act as the key light on the wall. Two exposures per setup — one metered for the shade interior, one for the fixture body — were composited so the warm glow, glass texture, and metal finish all hold detail in a single frame.

Detail and Hardware Frames

Close-up frames isolate the backplate, arm joint, shade rim, and inline switch. A 100mm macro at f/8 keeps the full depth of the fixture sharp while the concrete background falls softly out of focus. These frames serve Amazon's zoom-view requirement and give catalog buyers a clear read on finish quality and construction.

Post-Production and Retouching

Compositing blended the two exposures with luminosity masks; no HDR tone mapping was used, keeping the glow natural. Wall surfaces were cleaned of mounting marks and dust. Color was calibrated on a profiled monitor so brass reads as brass (not orange) and the 2700K glow stays warm without shifting into yellow. Final files delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB, plus print-resolution masters.
