Ceramic Tile Samples Product Photography

The client manufactures ceramic tiles for interior projects and commissioned AIMI Visual Media in Guangzhou, China to photograph its sample range for catalog and marketplace use. The samples are thick through-body panels with a fine brushed matte texture, spanning 12 colors from sand and terracotta to charcoal and silver. We delivered 9 studio images from our Guangzhou studio: 2 full-range stacks, 3 dark and neutral series on split-tone sets, and 4 grayscale arrangements on white, all color-managed against the physical panels under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Color accuracy is the product. Buyers order from these images. If terracotta drifts toward brick red on screen, the sample that arrives will not match what the buyer approved, so every setup is grey-card referenced and the grade is checked against the physical panels, not against memory.

2. Matte texture needs raking light. The fine brushed grain only shows under light that rakes across the surface at a low angle. Front light flattens it to a plain color card, but raking light also exaggerates every edge chip and dust speck, so panel prep has to be exact.

3. Dark panels merge into one slab. A stack of near-black panels reads as a single block unless each layer catches its own edge highlight. The light falloff across the stack is engineered panel by panel, which is why the dark series separates cleanly at the edges.

4. Gloss level lies at glancing angles. A matte panel meters brighter as the camera angle drops, so the same sample can photograph as two different finishes. Camera height is locked across the range and the panels, not the camera, do the moving.

Our Approach

Color-Range Stacks

The 2 range frames stack all 12 colors in a stepped arrangement so each panel shows its face and its thickness edge at once. We shot them with the 24-70mm at 70mm from a raised tripod rather than a wider lens up close, because a wide lens at short distance makes the near panels larger than the far ones and misrepresents the range. A large diffused source at about 45 degrees keeps the matte texture readable without specular glare, and a white bounce card on the shadow side holds the darker panels off the noise floor.

Dark Series on Split Sets

The charcoal and black series sits on sets split between black and white. The panels are stacked in a uniform offset, and the main light rakes in low from the front so every layer catches a separate edge highlight while the gaps between panels fall into clean shadow. That falloff is doing real work: it is the only thing separating 4 near-black panels from each other on screen. The split set gives buyers both references at once, dark panel on black and dark panel on white.

Post-Production and Retouching

All 9 frames grade against the physical panels: white balance locked at 5000K with a grey-card reference at every set change, and each color matched to its sample within DeltaE 2 in retouching. Dust and edge chips were cleaned at 200% zoom, with 0.5px output sharpening. Files were delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB in JPEG (quality 90) and WebP, ready for catalog layout and marketplace upload.
