PNY and HP USB Flash Drive Product Photography

The client distributes portable storage and needed one shoot to cover two retail finishes of the same carabiner drive chassis: the PNY gold 64GB USB 3.0 and the HP gunmetal 64GB. The drives sell on build quality: all-metal bodies, spring-loaded clips, etched branding. The imagery has to make metal look like metal. All 6 frames were shot at the AIMI Visual Media studio in Guangzhou, China, with textured beds of coffee beans, grains and wet gravel carrying the rugged story, and delivered under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Mirror-polished metal reflects the whole studio. A gold drive at macro distance mirrors the camera, the operator and every light in the room. The set is enclosed in a diffusion tent so the drive reflects only controlled white surfaces, and the remaining highlight line is positioned with a strip softbox so it runs along the bevel like a factory-applied accent.

2. Etched black text on gold has almost no contrast. The PNY logo, 64G and USB 3.0 markings are shallow etchings that vanish under flat light. A low raking key throws a micro-shadow into each etched stroke, and exposure is set a third of a stop down so the gold stays saturated instead of blowing to yellow-white.

3. Gold and gunmetal need one light recipe in the same frame. Frames 3 and 4 place both finishes side by side on the same bed. The gold reads warm and the gunmetal reads cool under any single white balance, so the lights are mixed 3200K and 5600K on opposite sides, so each metal gets the temperature that flatters it, and the bed between them stays neutral.

4. A 10cm drive drowns in a textured bed. Coffee beans and gravel pieces are nearly the same size as the drive itself. The drive is seated on a hidden acrylic riser so it sits proud of the bed by about 5mm, and depth of field is held at f/8 so the drive and the nearest beans stay sharp while the far bed softens.

Frame 2 is the Amazon workhorse: the PNY drive isolated on white at f/11, clip hinge and knurled release knob sharp, etched text readable at full zoom. The keyboard in frame 1 plays context prop, associating the drive with everyday desk carry without touching the product.

Texture beds for the rugged story.

Frames 3 to 6 stage the drives on coffee beans, mixed grains with amber pebbles, and wet quartz gravel. Each bed is chosen for contrast — dark oily beans under the gold drive, pale wet gravel under the gunmetal — and the gravel is misted so the stones gloss up and echo the polished metal.

Post-production and delivery.

Fingerprint and dust removal on polished metal is frame-by-frame work at 200% zoom. The gold tone is locked to the physical drive under D65, etch shadows are kept, and all 6 frames were delivered as 2000px sRGB JPG plus WebP.
