City Aerial Image Film Production

The government client needed a city image film for external promotion, investment presentations and image display, one that conveys modern development achievement and the temperament of an international metropolis. We proposed telling it entirely from altitude: no presenters, no interviews, just the city itself at scales people never see from the street, with an emotive score and a “look out with you” narrative stance that links the government and its citizens toward a shared future.

Creative Concept

City image films live on macro narrative plus emotional resonance. High aerials establish scale and structure, clouds threading between towers create the dreamlike “city above the clouds”, and golden-hour light gives concrete warmth and hope. We scheduled dawn and dusk windows, paired the images with a lyrical, aspirational score and copy, and kept people out of frame so the city stays the sole protagonist. Cloud sea, low sun and landmarks are a proven trio because they read instantly on a big screen.

Production

We flew the DJI Inspire 3 with the Zenmuse X9-8K Air gimbal camera, recording 8K at 25fps to leave room for reframing and stabilization in post. Altitudes ran 500 to 1000 meters over Lujiazui, the Huangpu River bend and the Bund’s historic waterfront. Shooting windows were 5:30 to 7:00 in the morning and 17:30 to 19:00 in the evening, using low-angle sun and advection fog for layering. In DaVinci Resolve we graded a warm-gold against teal-blue contrast, which gives the towers real impact on large screens.

Production Challenges

1. Central-city airspace is tightly controlled. We filed the flight permit application with air traffic authorities 15 business days ahead, submitting the flight plan, drone credentials and insurance proof. On flight days a ground observer kept watch and maintained contact with the tower, so every sortie stayed inside approved windows and corridors.

2. Cloud seas and advection fog depend entirely on weather. We monitored meteorological data a week ahead and targeted mornings with humidity above 85 percent and wind below level 3. Three backup shoot days were held in the schedule, which turned a gamble on conditions into a managed risk with options.

3. Glass curtain walls throw harsh reflections into the frame. We planned flight angles that avoided overhead midday light, favoring side light and backlight that give the towers shape, and cleaned up remaining stray reflections in post with a polarizing-effect plugin. At these altitudes, flight path planning is really light planning.
