AIMI Visual Media produced a 43-second function demo video for a smart lighting brand’s motion sensor lamp, staged in a studio-built nighttime bedroom. Shot on a Sony A7S3 at 1080p 25fps with an F1.4 lens, the film follows a sleeper getting up as the lamp triggers on. Delivery took 6 business days.

The client, a smart lighting brand, needed an e-commerce main-image video that proves one thing fast: the lamp lights when someone approaches and turns off after they leave. We chose a real nighttime bedroom scene built in our studio, kept the set dressing minimal, and let a person’s natural getting-up motion trigger the sensor on camera. The brief asked for a 43-second landscape master for the listing’s main-image slot, with the option to cut 15 to 30 second vertical versions for Douyin and WeChat Channels.

Creative Concept
Buyers of sensor lamps decide on functional trust, so the strategy was real scene plus function demonstration. We rebuilt the single most frequent use case, getting up at night, in a low-light bedroom: legs enter the frame, footsteps cross the sensor zone, and the lamp answers with warm white light. The selling point acts itself out instead of being narrated. Only essential environment information stays in frame, the lamp’s warm glow band works as the visual focus, and a closing caption, “lights on when you come, off when you go,” seals the message.
Production
We shot on a Sony A7S3 with the FE 35mm F1.4 GM, recording 1080p at 25fps. The bedroom corner was built in the studio, with a wall power socket added for lived-in realism. The sensor lamp’s own warm white output served as the key light; a tiny Aputure MC from above traced a faint rim along the subject’s legs while ambient light was pressed as low as possible. F1.4 wide open and the A7S3’s dual native ISO kept the very low exposure usable. The action was choreographed to a natural getting-up rhythm: sit up, step down, pass the lamp, with the trigger point taped on the floor and five to eight takes per move to catch the best trigger timing.
Production Challenges
1. Noise in a near-dark frame. We switched the A7S3 to its high native ISO step, kept ISO at 6400 or below, and shot wide open at F1.4. In post, DaVinci Resolve temporal noise reduction cleaned the frame while protecting the soft falloff of the lamp’s glow band, so the dark bedroom stays moody instead of muddy.
2. Sensor timing versus the actor’s walk. The trigger point was marked on the floor with tape, and the performer rehearsed the path more than five times until it became muscle memory. During takes the director called a countdown so the foot entered the sensing zone at the exact frame the lamp fired and the camera captured it.
3. Exposure jumps when the lamp switches on. We locked manual exposure and based settings on the lamp-on state: shutter 1/50, aperture F1.4. The lamp-off frames were allowed to read darker rather than letting auto exposure compensate, which keeps brightness consistent across the trigger moment and avoids the flickering bright-dark pulsing viewers read as amateur.

Where the Film Lives
The 43-second landscape master runs in the flagship store main-image video slot on major marketplaces, the detail page function demo area, and the brand website product page. Vertical cuts at 15 to 30 seconds feed Douyin in-feed ads, WeChat Channels promotion, and marketplace main-image video slots. A key frame of the lamp lighting moment was also pulled as a detail page selling-point image, paired with the “lights on when you come” caption for a complete feature statement.
A function demo lives or dies in the first three seconds: the feature must be visible before the viewer swipes. The truer the scene and the lighter the acting, the more believable the function. Pretty set dressing only steals attention from the moment that sells. — June, Product Photography Team Lead
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a function demo video like this take?
On this project, script discussion and confirmation took 2 business days, studio set building and the shoot took 1 day, and edit plus color took 3 business days, for a 6 business day delivery. If you need a rush schedule, contact our team to confirm timing and cost.
How much does a product function video cost?
Product videos at AIMI start from $200 per finished video. A multi-deliverable scope like this project, with the master film plus vertical cuts and pulled still frames, is quoted by brief. Share your product, platform plan, and version count and we will send a written quote.
Will the product be hard to see in a night scene?
No. The sensor lamp emits light itself, so it becomes the natural focus of the frame; the person and the room only need a faint rim of fill to read their outlines. For function demos the first goal is seeing the function, and low light is exactly how this product looks its best.
Do we need professional actors on camera?
No. This kind of function demo only shows partial framing, legs and hands, so a member of the client’s team can do it, or we can arrange a parts model. With no face on camera there is no portrait licensing step, which keeps the process simpler.
Can you deliver vertical versions for Douyin?
Yes. The landscape master is delivered at 1920×1080, and we can cut 15 to 30 second vertical versions at 1080×1920 for Douyin and WeChat Channels placement. The vertical cuts come from the same 25fps master material, so motion and image quality stay consistent across placements.
What deliverables are included?
You receive the 43-second landscape master as MP4 in H.264 or H.265 at 20Mbps, plus a ProRes 422 MOV master file for archiving or re-editing. Vertical cutdowns and pulled key frames, such as the lamp lighting moment, can join the same delivery package.
How do you keep noise under control in near-dark scenes?
The A7S3 offers dual native ISO, so we switch to the high step and keep ISO at 6400 or below with the lens wide open at F1.4. DaVinci Resolve temporal noise reduction then cleans residual noise while preserving the lamp’s soft glow transitions.
How do you sync the sensor trigger with the actor?
We tape the trigger point on the floor, rehearse the walk more than five times until the performer holds it in muscle memory, then use a director’s countdown during takes. That lands the foot inside the sensing zone at the exact frame the lamp fires.
Which platforms does this video fit?
The landscape master fits e-commerce main-image slots, detail page demo areas, and brand website product pages. Vertical cuts serve Douyin in-feed ads and WeChat Channels promotion, so one shoot covers both shelf placements and feed traffic.
