Seasonal costume lines sell on atmosphere: the set has to sell the story before the garment detail convinces the buyer. This session built three distinct haunted-house moments. Frame 1 stands three children at a peeling distressed doorway, two girls in ivory ghost-bride tulle dresses with aged-print tiers flanking a boy in a black skeleton-print hoodie set, two floating sheet ghosts behind them. Frame 2 moves to a storybook corner where a pirate frock coat with gold frogging meets a blush rococo gown and powdered wig, lit jack-o-lanterns throwing warm orange against cool distressed teal walls. Frame 3 grades three costume looks on wooden stools, ringed by five sheet ghosts, for a playful ensemble closer.

Photography Challenges
1. Dark sets can swallow dark costumes. The skeleton sweatsuit and the striped cape suit sit near the tonal value of the unlit doorway and shadowed walls. A warm key carves the children off the set, and the doorway stays pitch black only behind the sheet ghosts, so costume print and silhouette never merge into the background.
2. Printed distressing must not read as dirt. The ivory tulle dresses carry a printed aged-stain pattern that can look like accidental soiling in flat light. Directional warm light rakes across the tiers so the print reads as intentional ghost-sheet texture, and retouch keeps the marks consistent frame to frame.
3. Projected shadows need exact placement. Bat and castle silhouettes are projected, not painted, so they shift with lamp position. Each projection is framed to clear the children's faces and land on open wall, keeping the scare graphic legible without crossing skin.
4. Three child energies in one frame. Ages three to six take direction differently. The shoot works in short bursts with the stools and doorway as fixed marks, catching the laughing peaks between resets rather than forcing held poses.
Our Approach
The doorway ensemble.
Frame 1 lines the three children along the distressed jamb so the peeling wallpaper, olive trim and black threshold box the group in; the ghost props float in the dark doorway behind, and warm front light keeps ivory tulle and skeleton print equally readable.
The storybook pair.
Frame 2 pairs the pirate and the rococo aristocrat in a two-shot: her hand rests on his tricorn hat, the plush pug on its leash anchors the lower right, and projected bat shadows fill the teal wall so the costumes stay the bright subject.
The stool closer.
Frame 3 sets the three looks on graded-height stools with five sheet ghosts in a floor semicircle; the height ladder shows each costume head to toe and gives the campaign its ensemble-wide final image.
Continuity across sets.
All three frames share one warm amber key recipe and one shadow density target, so the capsule drops into a single listing or lookbook page without re-grading.
"With child models, build the set first and let the costume play happen inside it. The frame is won in the two minutes of real laughter, not the twenty minutes of posing." — Garbo, Director of Photography

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a childrenswear costume studio session priced?
Studio childrenswear sessions are billed from $800/day per photography team, with child model agency fees, styling and set build itemized separately. A three-set costume day returns a written per-project quote after a brief call.
Can you build themed sets like a haunted house?
Yes. We design and build distressed flats, projection backdrops and prop dressing in-house, scaled to child-height sightlines so the set supports the costume rather than dwarfing it.
How do you handle child models on set?
We work with licensed child model agencies, keep guardians on set, and shoot in short directed bursts with fixed marks, which is how genuine expressions end up in catalog frames.
What is the turnaround?
Standard delivery is 5-7 business days from shoot day, including retouching and grade matching across the set series.
Who owns the images?
Your brand does, under a full commercial license covering catalog, marketplace, social and advertising use.
