The client is BLUEMAN, a men's grooming brand positioned on clean, masculine design. The shoot covered two forms of one formula: a navy air cushion BB compact and a matching pump bottle. The brief asked for a dark, premium, low-key treatment — nothing like the bright pastel look of women's cosmetics — with texture proof of the dewy formula built into the frames. We shot on black sets with geometric navy plinths in our Guangzhou studio and delivered 7 images with a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges
1. Navy on black is a disappearing act. The packaging is deep navy and the brand look is black sets, and dark-on-dark merges into a shapeless hole if you light it lazily. We separated with light, not outlines: a gridded softbox camera-left at 45 degrees draws a clean highlight along the compact’s rim, and a weak fill from the right keeps the shadow side just above pure black, so the round form stays three-dimensional.
2. A dewy formula must photograph wet. BB cream’s selling point is moisture, and a matte, dry-looking swatch kills the claim. We styled the cushion with a fresh swipe of formula and placed three real droplets of essence on the foam, then lit from a low front-left so every droplet carries a bright catchlight. The texture frames read as hydration, not grease, because each highlight is small and controlled.
3. Two forms, one campaign. The compact and the pump bottle are different shapes sold as one routine, and shooting them in unrelated styles splits the brand. Both were photographed on the same black sets with the same navy stepped plinths and the same rim-light logic, so a buyer scrolling between SKUs sees one continuous product world.
4. Glossy black surfaces show everything. The reflective black set gives the premium mirror effect, and it also shows every dust particle, fingerprint, and wiping streak at 100% zoom. We cleaned with an air blower and microfiber between every frame and finished with a dust-removal pass in retouching, because on a black set, dust is the loudest thing in the image.
Our Approach
Suspended-lid hero shot.
For the compact’s hero frame we mounted the lid hovering above the base on a hidden support, so the buyer sees the AIR CUSHION BB edge text, the mirror, and the quilted cushion in one glance. The support was retouched out, leaving the product apparently floating — a small piece of theater that a flat open-compact shot cannot give.
Texture proof built into the frame.
Instead of describing the formula in copy, we put it in the images: a curved swipe across the cushion shows cream body, three droplets show hydration, and the pump-bottle frame carries a long tapered swatch showing shade and spread. Each texture was lit with a low, hard-ish accent to raise specular sheen on the cream without blowing it out.
Retouching and delivery.
Retouching removed the lid support, cleaned dust and handling marks on the glossy sets, and matched the navy packaging and beige formula back to the physical products under D65 light. Files were delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB in JPEG quality 90 plus WebP, ready for marketplace slots and brand campaigns.
"Dark sets are unforgiving: every highlight is a decision. On a black set I place each one by hand and remove everything else." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How is cosmetics photography like this priced?
Styled low-key images start at $35 per image under our Growth package, and white-background packshots start at $12 per image under Essential. A 7-image campaign like this one starts around $245. All rates are starting prices — final quote depends on sets, SKUs, and texture requirements.
How long does a two-SKU cosmetics shoot take?
This 7-image set covering two packaging forms was shot in one studio day and delivered in 5 business days including retouching. Our standard turnaround is 5-7 business days, with rush scheduling for launch dates.
Can you show our formula’s real texture in photos?
Yes. Texture is styled directly on the product: swatches, droplets, and cushion surfaces are prepared on set and lit for specular sheen, as in the macro frames here. Shade and finish are matched to physical samples under D65 light before delivery.
Can you keep one visual style across different packaging forms?
Yes. Sets, plinths, and lighting logic are fixed per campaign, so compacts, bottles, and tubes photographed together or months apart sit in the same product world. This two-form set is the working example.
Do you shoot men’s grooming products differently from women’s cosmetics?
The lighting discipline is the same, but the styling language changes: dark sets, harder lines, and geometric props replace pastel and floral cues. We design the set around your brand book, not around category habit.
Can these images feed Amazon A+ Content?
Yes. The 2000x2000px sRGB masters cover standard image slots, and the texture macros and suspended-lid hero were composed for A+ modules. A+ Content layout and module design is available from $80 per SKU under the Premium package.
