Retail cartons earn their photography budget in the details: the quilted deboss pattern, the contrast between matte black and silver band, the crispness of small benefit text. This frame was built to reproduce all three honestly, at an angle that shows the front face and the spine in one read.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Sheet mask retail carton, quilted matte black with silver band |
| Deliverables | Three-quarter packaging hero on white |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Seamless white, single box, soft shadow under base |

Photography Challenges
1. Reproducing a subtle deboss pattern. The quilted crosshatch sits barely below the surface. Frontal light erases it; grazing light that reveals it also reveals every handling scuff on the matte black.
2. Keeping matte black from going muddy. Black packaging on white is a metering trap: expose for the white and the box dies to silhouette; expose for the box and the background greys.
3. Holding small white text crisp on black. The benefit copy is small white sans-serif on black. Any halation or overexposure thickens the strokes and the text turns fuzzy.
Our Approach
Grazing reveal, flagged fallout
A large source rakes across the front face at a shallow angle so the deboss casts its micro-shadows, while flags keep that light off the spine and background. One sample box was sacrificed to handling tests to pick the cleanest unit for the final frame.
Two-zone metering
We exposed for the box with the background lit separately to pure white. The silver band was metered to sit bright but below clipping, so its metallic read survives next to the black.
Text-protecting contrast control
The frame was captured a third-stop under beauty exposure and lifted in raw with a soft curve, which keeps the white print strokes thin and the quilt pattern intact.
"A packaging portrait succeeds when the buyer feels the box weight through the screen. That is texture, shadow and metering, not resolution." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
Why shoot retail cartons at a three-quarter angle?
It proves physical reality: front design and spine in one read, with natural shadow. Buyers and distributors trust a photographed object more than a flat mockup.
Can you capture debossed or textured packaging?
Yes. Raked light reveals surface texture by micro-shadow. The craft is flagging that same light off the areas where it would expose scuffs and edges.
Do you photograph multiple packaging units for one SKU?
We inspect several units and photograph the cleanest. Matte black shows every fingerprint, so unit selection is half the result.
Packaging that needs to feel real on screen?
Send the cartons. We will reproduce the texture, the finishes and the small print the way the production line made them.
