Seven frames for a mass-premium skincare family: the 24K gold-flake essence in its dropper bottle, the 500ml vitamin toners with their shimmer suspension, a poured texture puddle that proves the gold, and the amino mousse that rounds out the line. More work from this category lives in our cosmetics photography collection.

Gold-flake skincare is a texture product: the buyer is paying for what they can see suspended in the bottle. So the session was built around visibility, transmitted light for the flake suspension, a poured puddle that puts the texture at macro distance, and set styling that keeps the mass-market price point feeling considered rather than cheap.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Gold-flake essence, vitamin C toners, amino cleansing mousse |
| Deliverables | Seven frames: singles, styled scenes, texture pour |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Diagonal cards, glass ornaments, miniature props, water-white sets |
| Usage | Marketplace galleries and social commerce |
Photography Challenges
1. Making gold flakes glow, not sink. Suspended gold leaf reads as glittering luxury or as brown specks depending entirely on light direction. The flakes need transmitted light from behind the liquid to catch fire.
2. A pour with structure. The texture frame shows essence pooling from the open bottle. The puddle has to read viscous, gold-flecked and deliberate, which means controlling viscosity temperature and pour height, then shooting fast.
3. Big bottles, small props. The 500ml toner dwarfs miniature props. Scale relationships were rehearsed so the tricycle and basket read as charming scale cues instead of toys next to a cylinder.
Our Approach
Backlight for the flake
Essence frames were lit with a rear panel transmitting through the liquid, so each gold flake lights from behind while a flagged front fill keeps the label sharp. The bottle glows; the text stays readable.
Controlled pour sequence
The puddle frame was built from a measured pour onto a level white plate, shot in a burst as the pool settled, then the bottle neck was positioned into the edge for the final composite-ready frame.
Diagonal energy on a budget set
Colored cards under the bottle create diagonal movement and brand-color echoes without expensive set builds, a technique that lifts mass-market packaging into campaign territory.
"Suspension products are proof products. If the buyer cannot see the gold move in the liquid, the claim is just text. Light the liquid, then light the label, in that order." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you photograph gold-flake skincare so it sparkles?
With transmitted light: a panel behind the bottle fires light through the liquid so each flake catches it, while front fill keeps the label legible. Front-only light is what turns gold flakes into brown specks.
Can you shoot texture pours of serums?
Yes. We do measured pours onto controlled surfaces and shoot the settling sequence in bursts, so the final frame shows true viscosity with the ingredient suspension intact. It is the most convincing texture proof a listing can carry.
Do large-format bottles photograph differently?
They do. A 500ml bottle dominates the frame and dwarfs props, so compositions shift to scale cues and diagonal set lines rather than clustered arrangements. The goal is the same: the bottle owns the frame.
A formula whose selling point is visible in the bottle?
Send it. We will light the liquid, pour the proof and deliver frames where the ingredient story needs no caption.
