Four three-piece mini hi-fi systems in one catalog session: matched speaker pairs and head units shot straight or at a slight angle on white, with gold cones, red cones and chrome trim each getting light that respects its finish and the same layout grid.

A three-piece system is a composition problem: two tall speakers flanking a head unit, and the frame fails if the trio drifts apart or the center sinks. Each system was built out from measured marks so speaker spacing and head-unit height stay constant, then lit for its own finish, from gold anodized trim to piano black.
| Project Overview | |
|---|---|
| Product type | Three-piece mini hi-fi systems, four models |
| Deliverables | One catalog frame per system |
| Shoot location | AIMI studio, Guangzhou |
| Styling | Seamless white, symmetrical arrangement, no props |
| Usage | Catalog, distributor listings and retail flyers |
Photography Challenges
1. Three objects that must read as one product. Speakers and head unit were placed on measured marks with equal gaps and a level center line. Symmetry is what makes a separated kit photograph as a single system instead of three items sharing a frame.
2. Gold, red, chrome and piano black in one session. Each finish reflects differently: gold trim needs warm flags, piano black needs clean white panels, red cones saturate fast. Lighting was rebalanced per system while the camera and background stayed fixed.
3. Grille mesh moiré. Fine speaker mesh fights the sensor and produces moiré patterns. Aperture and slight camera-angle shifts were chosen per system to kill the interference at capture rather than blur it out later.
Our Approach
Measured layout grid
A taped grid on the sweep fixed speaker spacing and head-unit position across all four systems, giving the catalog one consistent architecture.
Per-finish light tuning
Flags and reflector cards were re-dressed for each system’s trim material, while the key light and camera never moved. Finishes keep their character without breaking set consistency.
Moiré managed in camera
Grille patterns were checked at 100% on set; aperture and angle were adjusted until the mesh rendered clean, avoiding the soft look of post blur fixes.
"A system photograph is really about the spaces between the pieces. Get the gaps equal and the center line level, and the buyer sees one product. Get them wrong and the buyer sees clutter." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you keep multi-piece systems consistent across a catalog?
Yes. A taped layout grid fixes spacing and center height for every system, so any two models photographed months apart still share the same architecture on the page.
How do you avoid moiré on speaker grilles?
In camera, not in post: we check the grille pattern at full magnification on set and tune aperture and angle until the interference disappears. Post blur softens the whole product and we avoid it.
Do different finishes need different lighting?
They need different flags, not different sets. Gold, chrome and gloss black each get their own reflector cards under one fixed key light, so finishes keep their character while the catalog stays uniform.
An audio range with too many finishes?
Send the lineup. One grid, one key light, per-model flag work: the whole catalog comes home looking like one family.
