Six wired gaming mice from one product line, each with its own shell mold and backlight pattern, shot top-down with the LEDs on, plus one profile frame for the ergonomics argument, all on one white sweep under one lighting plan.

A backlit mouse photographed unlit is a rumor. Every variant in this session was shot powered, with exposure balanced to hold both the matte shell and the glowing light pipes in one capture. Five top-down frames map the range; a sixth profile frame shows the sculpted grip that the top view cannot.

Photography Challenges
1. Glowing plastic against matte shells. LED diffusers blow out at shell-correct exposures. Each frame was metered to hold the glow’s color while keeping shell texture, one capture, no composited light effects.
2. Six variants, one family look. Different molds, trim colors and glow patterns had to sit side by side on a range page. Camera height and background stayed fixed while each mouse was centered to the same mark.
3. Braided cables that misbehave. The red-black braided leads kink and wander. Each cable was steamed, curved deliberately out of frame, and pinned so the range frames share one tidy cable language.
Our Approach
Powered capture, single exposure
Mice were plugged in and lit to balance shell against glow. Real LEDs photograph with a depth that painted glows never match, and buyers of backlit gear can tell.
Range discipline
One camera height, one background, one centering mark. Five different shells land on the page as one product family.
Cable choreography
Each braided lead was shaped into the same exit curve. A small detail, but across six frames it is the difference between a catalog and a parts bin.
"Backlit products live or die on exposure discipline. Hold the glow and the shell in one frame and the product looks engineered; blow the LEDs and it looks like a toy." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you photograph products with their LEDs on?
Yes, and for backlit gear we recommend it. We meter to hold the glow’s color and the shell’s texture in one capture, so the lighting effect is real rather than retouched.
How do you keep a product range consistent?
Fixed camera height, one background, centering marks for every unit. Variants change; the setup does not. The range page then compares products, not photography.
How many frames does a peripheral variant need?
Usually one top-down per variant plus a shared profile or detail frame. The range frames sell the choice; the profile sells the ergonomics. We plan this per line before shooting.
A backlit range that deserves real light?
Send the variants. We will shoot them powered, in one locked setup, so the range page glows consistently from first frame to last.
