Paper Gift Bags Product Photography

The client produces paper gift bags for party and gifting retail and commissioned AIMI Visual Media in Guangzhou, China to photograph a multi-design collection for its e-commerce listings. The bags are coated art cardstock with satin ribbon handles, printed hang tags, and metallic foil accents, and the shoot covered 5 design families: pastel botanical, dalmatian dots and stripes, holographic geometric, confetti dots, and metallic stripes. We delivered 6 styled images from our Guangzhou studio, one collection group scene on an oak desk plus 5 lifestyle tableaux built around a lace-covered party table, all retouched to one bright high-key grade under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Foil only pays off at one angle. Gold and holographic foil shows its color only where it reflects the light source; everywhere else it reads as dull gray print. In a 4-bag group each bag has to be rotated until its foil catches the light, and those rotations fight the row arrangement.

2. Five design families, one grade. Botanical pastels, dalmatian dots, and metallic stripes end up in the same listing gallery. A grade tuned for the pastel set kills the glitter on the stripe set, so all 6 frames were built on one locked lighting recipe and one master grade.

3. Tissue paper wilts. Crumpled tissue fans lose their peaks within minutes of handling, and warm lights make it worse. A sagging tissue fan reads as a used bag, so the tissue is refanned for every frame and never carried over between setups.

4. Shallow depth must blur product, not hide it. The background bags sell the range of the collection, but they turn to mush if the focus plane sits wrong. Focus lands on the front bag's hang tag, and the rear bags stay just sharp enough for their prints to be identified.

Our Approach

Collection Group Scene

The opening frame lines all 4 botanical colorways up on an oak desk. We shot it with the 24-70mm at 50mm rather than going wider, because the row spans about 80cm and 50mm from 2 meters keeps the end bags the same size as the center pair; a 35mm would stretch the outer bags and make the set look uneven. A large soft source at camera-right does the work of a window, with a window-pattern gobo throwing a soft pane shadow on the beige wall behind. The pen cup, sticky notes, and woven lamp keep the desk in stationery territory, which is where gift bags live.

Party Table Scenes

The remaining 5 frames stage one design family at a time on a lace-covered table with grapes, lemons, pastry, and daisies. We picked f/4 over f/8: at f/8 the rear bags went sharp enough to compete with the hero bag, and at f/2.8 they dissolved into color smears. f/4 keeps the rear prints identifiable without giving them equal billing. The fruit and pastry are not decoration for its own sake. A gift bag sells the moment of giving, and a set table is that moment.

Post-Production and Retouching

All 6 frames grade to one high-key master: white balance locked at 5200K, -20 highlight recovery on the foil speculars so the gold keeps its color instead of clipping to white, and 0.5px output sharpening. Each print family was matched to the client's physical reference bag within DeltaE 2, since a botanical blue that drifts toward teal gets the listing a complaint. Files were delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB in JPEG (quality 90) and WebP, sized for direct upload to Amazon image slots and A+ Content modules.
