Beizilan, a Chinese personal care brand, commissioned AIMI Visual Media in Guangzhou, China to photograph its horse oil essential oil soap for e-commerce listings. The round, honey-amber translucent bar ships in a printed paper box, and the image set needed to work across Amazon, Shopify, and the brand's own social channels. We delivered 4 styled studio images: a product-only composition, a product-and-packaging shot, a water scene, and a group set arrangement — all produced in our Guangzhou studio and retouched to one consistent warm cream palette under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Translucent glycerin goes dull under front light. A honey-amber translucent bar only looks alive when light passes through it. Front-lit, it photographs as a flat, waxy disc with no depth, which is exactly how handmade soap ends up looking cheap on a listing page.

2. Amber shifts color fast. Under 3200K tungsten the bar turns orange-brown and reads as caramel candy; under 6500K daylight it goes grey-green. Holding the warm honey tone printed on the brand's box requires a locked 4900K setup and a grey-card reference for every lighting change.

3. The embossed seal is shallow. The round stamp on the bar face has under 1mm of relief. Flat frontal lighting erases it completely; only low-angle raking light reveals the emboss, but that same angle exaggerates every surface scratch and fingerprint, so prep and retouching have to compensate.

4. Water scenes degrade the product. A glycerin soap bar starts to soften and cloud within minutes in water, and every reset changes ripple patterns and bubble positions. The water shot has a working window of about 20 minutes before the bar's edges lose their crispness.

Our Approach

Warm Seamless Studio Shots

For the product-only and packaging compositions we worked on a warm cream seamless rather than a pure white sweep. The brand's palette is beige and gold, and a clinical white background would fight the box design. We chose the 100mm f/2.8L macro over the 24-70mm because the bar is under 8cm across: the macro's flat field keeps the round edge distortion-free and holds the shallow emboss sharp at f/8. A strip softbox behind and slightly above the bar drives light through the translucent body so it glows honey-colored instead of sitting dull, while a 60x90cm softbox at 45 degrees camera-left models the box. The single green grape in the hero shot is a scale and freshness cue. One prop only: a second element would start competing with the amber tone.

Water Scene and Group Set

For the water image we stood one bar on its edge and laid the second flat in a clear acrylic tray filled to 3cm: deep enough for ripples to read, shallow enough that the flat bar's face stays above the waterline. A 1/200s shutter freezes the ripple rings mid-movement, and we shot in bursts of 5-6 frames per disturbance, fully replacing the water between takes to keep it bubble-free. The group set uses a round mirror ring as the only prop: it echoes the bar's shape, visually doubles the product count, and its warm reflection keeps the beige-on-beige arrangement from going flat.

Post-Production and Retouching

All 4 frames were retouched to one master grade: white balance locked at 4900K, +5 warmth, -15 highlight recovery on the water reflections, and 0.5px output sharpening. Backgrounds were cleaned to a uniform cream, not pushed to pure white, since that would break the warm palette. We removed fingerprints and micro-scratches from the bar faces at 200% zoom, matched the amber tone across all 4 images to within DeltaE 2, and delivered 2000x2000px sRGB files in both JPEG (quality 90) and WebP, ready for direct upload. The 2000px files drop straight into Amazon image slots and A+ Content modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a soap bar product shoot like this cost?

Styled studio images like this set start from $35 per image under our Growth package, including props, styling, professional retouching, and unlimited revisions. Pure white-background versions for Amazon main-image slots start from $12 per image under our Essential package.

How long did this 4-image soap shoot take?

This set was delivered in 5 business days, inside our standard 5-7 business day schedule. The water scene adds about 40 minutes of tray setup and reset time on shoot day, and glycerin soap limits each water take to a 20-minute working window before the bar softens.

Are these images compliant with Amazon requirements?

The set is delivered at 2000x2000px sRGB, well above Amazon's 1000px zoom minimum, and is built for A+ Content, Storefront, and secondary listing slots. Amazon main images require a pure white background. We can add white-background versions of the same SKUs at $12 per image within the same session.

How do you keep translucent soap from looking dull in photos?

Backlighting. We place a strip softbox behind the bar so light passes through the glycerin body and the amber tone glows, then add frontal fill about 1 stop lower so the face keeps detail. Front light alone flattens the bar into a waxy disc; backlight alone blows out the edges — the ratio between the two holds both the glow and the surface texture.

Can you photograph soap in water without damaging it?

Yes, with strict timing. The bar sits in a 3cm acrylic tray for no more than 20 minutes, we shoot in 5-6 frame bursts per water disturbance, and the bar is patted dry immediately after. Glycerin soap clouds water quickly, so the tray is fully refilled between takes, typically 8-10 refills for one usable water frame.

Will the color stay consistent across our full SKU line?

Yes. White balance is locked at 4900K with a grey-card reference at every setup change, and in retouching each SKU is matched to a master frame within DeltaE 2. Across Beizilan's 4-image set, every bar grades to the same honey tone so the listing gallery reads as one continuous shoot.

Do you photograph the packaging together with the product?

Yes. 2 of the 4 images in this set include the Beizilan box. We style box-plus-bar compositions at a 30-45 degree camera height so the label stays legible, and we shoot the box face-on first to confirm the logo and product name are tack sharp before building the scene around it.
