Our Approach

White Background Pack Shot

The white-background pack shot covers the 0W-20 kiwami-line can. We used the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS instead of the 24-70mm for its flat field, which keeps label text sharp edge to edge with zero perspective distortion on the 24cm tall rectangular can. We set aperture to f/11 to cover the can's 8cm depth from front face to rear seam in full focus. Two 60x90cm softboxes sit at 45 degrees symmetric to control specular reflection on the gradient label, with exposure set to retain gold kanji detail instead of blowing highlights. A faint soft contact shadow under the can prevents the object from appearing disconnected from the frame.

Pour-Action Detail Shot

The pour-action detail frame covers the 5W-30 SKU. We used the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II set to 50mm for the longer working distance needed to frame a hand tilting the open can without crowding the lens. A dedicated backlight strip positioned behind the pour path makes the translucent cyan oil glow, addressing the dark-read issue of dyed lubricant under front light alone. High-speed flash with 1/4000s duration freezes the smooth oil stream without motion smear. The stream exits the bottom edge of frame to keep visual focus on the pour point, and the visible hand acts as a clear scale reference for can size.

High-Speed Liquid Concept Frames

The two high-speed concept frames use a cyan-dyed fluid matched to the oil's color, with no physical car parts or props. The first frame captures a droplet impact that forms a Worthington jet and concentric ripples arranged in an abstract steering wheel shape, a direct visual link between fluid performance and automotive use. The second frame captures a frozen translucent liquid arc with suspended spherical droplets, with a sliver of blue cup rim visible at bottom-left as the pour source and 75% of the frame left as pure white negative space reserved for ad copy. High-speed flash eliminates motion blur, and abstract fluid imagery centers the product's core functional attribute more directly than a standard car photo.

Post-Production and Retouching

Post-production follows a fixed, product-specific workflow. We applied -15 highlight recovery to the stamped tinplate top rim to retain metal texture without blown speculars, +5 white balance warmth to keep the brushed-gold kanji mark of the kiwami line from shifting to a green hue, and 0.5px output sharpening limited only to label text for readability.
