Photography Challenges
1. Food freshness under continuous lights. Dragon fruit wedges, cucumber slices, brie, and grapes lose moisture quickly under modeling lights. We pre-staged the board with stand-in pieces, then swapped in fresh produce immediately before each exposure, keeping surfaces chilled and covered between frames.
2. Bamboo color and grain consistency. The board's natural bamboo grain shifts between warm and cool depending on the light source, which can make a single listing look inconsistent. We matched white balance across all three scenes using a gray card and kept the board at a fixed angle so the grain direction read consistently.
3. Stainless-steel tool reflections. The four cheese tools have polished stainless-steel heads that pick up the softbox, camera, and crew if left uncontrolled. We used black flags on both sides of the set to shape the reflections into a clean gradient rather than broad white blocks.
4. Switching from bright flat-lays to a dark moody scene. The first two images required even, shadowless overhead light, while the third needed directional, low-key light on a black background. We reconfigured the key light from a directly overhead softbox to a side-angled softbox with a grid, adding a rim light to separate the hands and board from the black backdrop.
Our Approach
Overhead flat-lay construction.
We shot the two flat-lays from directly above with the camera mounted on a crossbar, keeping the board parallel to the sensor. Food was grouped around the two recessed compartments and the slotted tool edge so the board's features stayed readable; the four tools were fanned above the board in IMG1 and placed at upper right in IMG2 to leave clear negative space.
Lighting for two distinct moods.
The bright scenes used a large softbox directly overhead with a white reflector to fill shadows, giving even illumination on both the dark charcoal surface and the white textured surface. For the dark scene, we moved a gridded softbox to the side and flagged the lens, letting the light fall off quickly into the black background while still revealing the cheese rind and bamboo grain.
Retouching and Delivery.
Retouching was restrained: we corrected white balance against the gray card, cleaned small crumbs and sensor dust, and removed the wine-bottle label area since the bottle was an unbranded prop. Final files were exported as 2000x2000px sRGB JPEG quality 90 plus WebP, cropped and composed to fit Amazon image slots and to support A+ Content modules on Shopify.
"We stage with stand-ins first and bring in the real food only when the light, framing, and focus are locked; the food stays fresh and the shoot stays on schedule." — June, Product Photography Team Lead

Frequently Asked Questions
How much did the three styled images cost?
Three styled lifestyle images at $35 each total $105. There was no multi-SKU discount because this was a single product with three image angles; the 10% discount applies at 10+ SKUs and 15% at 30+ SKUs.
What is the turnaround time?
Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days. This set of three styled images was delivered in five business days.
Are the images compliant with Amazon's requirements?
Yes. The files are delivered at 2000x2000px on the longest side in sRGB, which meets Amazon's minimum 1600px zoom requirement. The bright flat-lays can be used as clean supporting images, and the compositions leave room for Amazon image slots and A+ Content.
How do you photograph a cheese board flat-lay without harsh shadows?
We mount the camera overhead and place a large softbox directly above the set, then add a white reflector opposite the key to lift shadows. This gives even light across the bamboo, food, and tools while preserving enough directional shadow to show the board's recessed compartments and grain.
Do we need to ship the product to Guangzhou, and can we direct the shoot remotely?
Yes, ship the bamboo board and tools to our Guangzhou studio. We can run remote art direction through a live feed so your team can approve framing, food placement, and lighting before final captures.
Can we reorder more images later and keep the same look?
We save the lighting diagrams, gray-card white-balance references, prop notes, and surface samples for each project. Reorders can match the bamboo color, food styling, and background treatment so new SKUs sit consistently beside the original three images.
