Photography Challenges

• Mirror-finish stainless steel: The polished blades reflect the entire studio environment. A single uncontrolled light source creates hotspots that make the steel look cheap instead of premium.
• Dual scissor set: Cutting and thinning scissors look similar at first glance. The images must clearly show the functional difference — smooth edge vs 30 teeth — so buyers understand why both are included.
• Thinning scissor tooth detail: The 30 teeth are under 2mm each. Standard product photography flattens them into a serrated line. Macro magnification is required to show the precision grinding that justifies the price point.
• Black finger rest contrast: The black polymer finger rests sit adjacent to mirror steel. Without careful lighting ratio control, the black areas crush to featureless voids while the steel blows out.

Our Approach

White Background Product Shots

We built a 3-sided lighting tent using 60x90cm softboxes to create a seamless reflection environment. The key light sits at 45 degrees with a diffusion panel to soften the highlight edge on the mirror steel. Two strip softboxes at 90 degrees create rim highlights that define the blade curve without adding exposure to the center. The camera is a Canon 5D Mark IV at f/11, 1/125s, ISO 100 — the aperture provides 10cm depth of field to keep the full 15cm blade sharp from tip to screw.

Thinning Scissor Macro Detail

The 30 teeth on the thinning scissor require 1:1 macro magnification to resolve individual tooth geometry. We switched to the 100mm macro at f/8, ISO 100. The wider aperture isolates the tooth plane while keeping the handle recognizable. A single overhead softbox creates even shadowing in each tooth gap — side lighting makes the teeth look like dents instead of functional cutting edges.

Black Background Creative Shot

For the black background image, we placed the thinning scissor on matte black acrylic with a single overhead softbox. Black flags on both sides prevent ambient reflection. The mirror steel picks up a natural gradient from the overhead light — bright at the top edge, fading to black at the bottom. This creates a premium look without props or set construction. Post-Production and Retouching

Mirror steel requires selective highlight control. We applied -10 highlight recovery in Lightroom to preserve the metallic gradient without graying the steel. The black finger rests received +15 shadow lift to restore texture without making them look gray. Each scissor was dust-spotted individually — the mirror finish shows every fingerprint and dust particle. Final delivery includes 3000px JPEG and PNG at 300 DPI, plus 1000px web-optimized versions.
