The client sells premium stick incense to gift and aromatherapy buyers and commissioned AIMI Visual Media in Guangzhou, China to photograph its Puruofan gift set for e-commerce listings. The set holds 3 cylindrical scent tubes, agarwood, sandalwood, and mugwort, inside a rigid presentation box with a kraft carrier bag. We delivered 5 styled images from our Guangzhou studio: the open box with a burning stick trailing real smoke, the boxed set with dried botanical props, a macro of the pressed stick texture, a calligraphy close-up of the 3 tubes, and the box-and-bag packaging pair, all on a black reflective set under a full commercial license.

Photography Challenges

1. Smoke is a one-chance exposure. The burning stick is the set's soul, but smoke reads only against a dead-black field and only for the seconds the ribbon holds its shape. The frame is lit, focused, and composed before the stick is lit; once burning, the camera works in burst until the smoke column bends.

2. Black box on black backdrop. The presentation box interior is near-black against a black sweep. Without edge control the box becomes a hole in the frame, so the set uses a thin rim light behind the product to carve the silhouette, and the reflective black table returns just enough separation at the base.

3. Calligraphy must stay legible at thumbnail. The tubes sell on their scent names in brush calligraphy. The close-up is shot at 100mm at f/8 so all 3 labels hold focus across the diagonal, because a fragrance buyer reads the scent before the brand.

4. Matte paper kills its own premium. Uncoated kraft and matte tubes absorb light and photograph flat. The lighting plan grazes a low soft key across the paper grain so texture reads as craft, and the grade lifts the paper a third of a stop against the black field.

The hero frame stages the open box on a wooden stand with the lid propped as a backdrop panel, the 3 tubes upright, and a single stick burning in its metal holder. Shot at 50mm with the key light high and left, the smoke catches the beam against the black field. The second scene adds the white boxes with dried branch and curled leaf, props chosen because they share the product's palette: bone, tan, and sage.

Macro and Packaging Frames

The texture macro pushes to the stick tips at near 1:1 with the 100mm macro, showing the pressed granular body that distinguishes real incense from bamboo-core dipped sticks. The packaging pair shoots the rigid box beside the kraft carrier on the reflective black table, straight-on at 70mm, with the brand seal held sharp because gift buyers buy the box first.

Post-Production and Retouching

All 5 frames grade to one dark master: white balance locked at 5000K, blacks held rich without crushing the box interior, and +8 clarity on the paper grain only. The smoke ribbon is selected from the cleanest burst frame and blended at full resolution.
